I assume that Kelvin Sampson voted for Memphis. However, in the back of his mind (or the front), he knows he has the team to beat.
[Or did the local media vote, not the coaches? ... Never mind. Per the AAC website, the coaches voted & were not permitted to vote for their own team or players.]
Penny just got a contract extension yesterday through '27-28. Memphis is going to double down and run the conference after UC and Houston get out. Kind of like they did with Calipari in CUSA.

That will not get us an invitation to the dance. Only 2 teams (maybe 3 if the conference shows really strong) from the AAC will be there so we have to either place second or win the conference tourney. The only exemption would be if UC wins the Maui.
Maui is going to be a learning experience. I don't expect any W's but we will learn exactly what we have and what we need to work on. Evaluations against that level of competition is much more realistic and beneficial than lopsided wins over inferior competition. I am hopeful that we have better floor leaders, more assists, better rebounding and much better shot selection. We can build from that but I am concerned expectations may be a bit too high at this point. I think by the start of conference play, we should be a pretty competitive unit and hopefully can be in the discussion for post season play.
The current computer rankings will be very fluid for a while. There's too little data at this point. They'll make more sense after each team has played about ten games.
