Morehead St was a tournament team last season out of the OVC. They opened the season on Monday by getting whomped on by Louisville 93-45. Tonight the play something something called Boyce and then they'll head to Clifton on Friday. The 45 points in Monday's games put them at or near the bottom of most offensive categories tracked by NCAA stats. It's really too early to make much of that though.

Kenny White Jr does the scoring and Dieonte Miles does the rebounding for the Eagles. Those are the two guys to focus the defense on.

As always when we play Morehead State, I'm reminded of former HC Dick Fick, RIP.

The Cats host Morehead State Friday night in a game that should test UC only a little bit more than did UAPB. KenPom has an early ranking of the Eagles at #283. For comparison, the Golden Lions sit at #358 (out of 364 schools).

UofL, under new coach Pat Kelsey, took care of their business against MSU on Monday night, 93-45. The Eagles hit only 12 of 52 shots (a crisp 23.1%). Only one MSU player reached double-digits, forward Kenny White (14). None of the others even came close. In addition to wretched shooting, the Eagles turned it over 20 times.

A guy I used to work with was a fraternity mate of Dick Fick. From all accounts, a wild and crazy guy. I remember when he brought Morehead to the Shoe during the Huggins era. The Eagles hit three straight treys to open the game 9-0. He was having a lot of fun, racing up and down in front of his bench each time, holding his hands up to signify the 3-pointers.

He was a character. Reminded me a bit of Chris Farley both in size and physical antics. I'm pretty sure some of that was liquid courage on Fick's part. The unfortunate part of his story is that he died from complications of alcoholism at 50.

Morehead started 4 new transfers against Louisville. The only returning starter was Dieonte Miles who saw limited action at Xavier over 3 seasons before starting 30 games at Morehead last season where he averaged 5 ppg and 5 rpg.

On top of a bad shooting night, Morehead committed 20 turnovers against Louisville.

They were picked to finish 5th out of 11 teams in the OVC.

Speaking of guys that played basketball in the Cincinnati area, guess who I saw playing on TV the other night? Sage Tolentino! He plays for UNC Asheville. He does not start, but he is tied for second most minutes after one game. He played 24 minutes. He looked good. He is a much better athlete than we gave him credit for (probably because we saw so little of him when he was at UC). Although Asheville was blown out by Alabama, Sage scored 6 points (1-5 FG and 4-4 from the FT line), 6 rebounds (3 offensive), 2 TOs, 1 steal, 1 blocked shot, and 1 assist. That is one complete stat line. Sage did some of everything. Good for him. Sage is only a sophomore. He is a 7'1" forward that shoots the 3. If he can get his scoring up to about 12 to 15 a game with about 8 to 11 rebounds a night, who knows what may happen to him in his playing career.

Did Miller give up on Tolentino too soon?

Nice to see that Sage got a lot of playing time in his first game. The fact his team lost by 56 points is a bit discouraging, but hopefully they have success against more level competition.

Vik (12 pts, 4 rebounds) and Jamille (17 pts, 6 rebounds) also had solid debuts with their new teams.

Hopefully, Sage's development continues in an upward trajectory from this point onwards.

Relative to the bigs he brought into the program, yes.

Now how about that? How is it that Miller could not get this kind of productivity out of these bigs? They then go somewhere else and are now setting the world on fire. Both Vik and Reynolds are better scorers than Aziz and maybe even Page. Hey, good for all of those young men. I am going to keep up with all of them this season just to compare outcomes. Thanks for the info.

By the way, both Vik and Reynolds are in their starting line-ups. Check that out. Not bad.

Maybe they are the focus of the offense and a PG who is feeding them the ball. Perhaps just different style offenses.

Not sure how we got on this part of the topic but I wanted to pass along that Vik got engaged over the summer if you were unaware. I'm not sure if they met at UC but if they did and she went down to SC before him, it would explain a lot about his motivation, etc. last season.

If she’s American maybe he can stay here when his student visa expires, if he wants to.

That explains a lot. I knew that name seemed familiar WIth Miles. Seems like based on one game he's more of a force this year
