  • Late Season Observation

Just a few thoughts on my behalf in reagrds to the current state of this years team. The Bearcats are currently 12-7 compared to last years team who was 13-6 at this point in the season.

Just a quick look at the current roster. Players who are progressing under Miller, or taking a backwards step:

Aziz Bandaogo: IMO this is the only player who has progressed from last year. Points are up 1.3 (7.8) compared to finishing last year at 6.6pts. Rebounds are down from 7.4 to 6 this year. His FT% is the biggest leap IMO from 54.5% to 66.7% this year. Overall a good player IMO but needs HELP desperately in the paint. Aziz can not do it all himself.

Dillon Mitchell: IMO by far the most athleticaly gifted of all the players on the current roster. If Dillon ever puts it altogether, he would be UC's next All American Canidate. His pts are up this year at 10.7 compared to 9.6 last year at Texas. Biggest drop is FT% at 37.5% this year compared to 59.8% last year. A little over 22% and you would have to ask why?

Dan Skillings Jr.: IMO probably the second most gifted athlete compared to Mitchell. Stat wise he's takin a backwards step in every category compared to last year. Biggest eye opener to me is rebounds 3.9 compared to 6.4 last year. Dan was hurt ealier in the year, but he's healthy now and looks lost IMO.

Jizzle James: Compared to minutes last year 19.3mins to 25.9mins this year, stats are decieving. Points are up from 8.8 to 10.4 this year, and rbs 3.5 from 1.9 last year. Keep in mind almost 6mins more a game. FT% is down from 78% last year, to 68.2% this year. Another big drop off IMO. Like Skillings looks lost the majority of the time on court.

Day Day Thomas: IMO a good solid player, who would be a backup PG on most teams. His minutes are down from last year 26.7 to 21.6 this year. He was also hurt (3) games earlier in the season. Rebounds and FT% are comparable from last year. Points however are down from 10.4 to 7.1 which is the biggest impact IMO.

Simas Lukosius: On paper identical in most stats, but still disappears at times in big games. Points last year, 11.8 to 12.3 this year. Rebounds and FT% slightly up from last year. Simas is playing aprox 2mins less per game from last year. Obviously more depth this year. Bottom line, looks lost or uninterested on the court at times.

Josh Reed: His stats are almost identical from last year at 11mins per game. Decent role player off the bench.

CJ Fredrick Jr.: Mintues have dropped by nearly 50% at 10.1 compared to 20.6 last year. He's a player who's been chronically injured his entire career wherever he's played. Gifted 3pt shooter coming out of Iowa, but you would never know it now! Has never lived up to his potential IMO

Arrinten Page: Transfer from USC! He was recruited heavily coming out of HS by UC. Eventually chose USC over UC, and a year later in Corryville. Stats are up in every category playing 2.7min more a game. Last year 3.1pts a game to 5.6pts this year. A young player who will only get better IMO. So, why isn't he getting more playing time?

Tyler Betsey: A gifted Player coming out of HS! A 5 Star Recruit, and could have played for Duke, Uconn etc... and chose UC. Tyler is playing roughly 11mins per game this year. Like ALL of Wes's Guards & Forwards, consistently wants to jackup 3s! I expected Tyler to be a scorer in the paint, driving to the basket. To this point, only a few small glimpses of that ability. Another young player who has the ability to be really good some day.

Connor Hickman: Again, another good role player coming off the bench. Stats cmpared to playing at Bradley are way down. 32mins compared to 19mins a game this year. Obviously Connor was a starter at Bradley compared to a bench player at UC. His PT total has taking a huge dive IMO from 14.5 to 4.3 this year. That to me is the biggest eye opener! Another player who looks completely lost at times.

Rayvon Griffith: Known as a big time scorer coming out of HS. Another fine Top 100 Recruit by most services. Can't even get on the floor! Why?? Doesn't practice hard enough? I'll SMH on this one until Rayvon decides to transfer. Which I would not be surprised if it's at the end of the year!!

Tyler McKinley: N/A! Was Tyler the X factor for this years team! A team that so DESPERATELY need a Big Man in the paint to HELP out Aziz. This would have been UC's wide body PF who could have pushed around other teams key players who scored in the paint. The first loss at Villanova showed how desperately Tyler could have HELPED. I guess will find out next year if he was the missing piece.

The above are the players who have Key Roles/Roles on this years team. On paper, we looked like a Top 25 team! I personally had high hopes this year. Finally returning to the NCAA Tournament. (19) Games into the season, you can forget about it! I said after the loss to Kansas this team would be lucky to win (3) more games. Looking at the remainder of the schedule, possibly a UTAH win at home and maybe TCU.

So what's the X Factor with the above players? Wes Miller!

Is Wes over his head? Defensivly we stink! The more talented teams we play, it shows! Offenively we're playing worse than last year! Last night was rock bottom at 52pts against BYU! I believe BYU allows 67pts per game. What happed to the other 15pts? This TEAM looks/appears to be lost under Wes Miller. So how does Wes fix it? Can Wes fix it? Will the incoming recruits be enough to get this team over the hump next year?

Wes is a really good recruiter IMO! Question I would ask, would Mick have been just as good if we were in the Big 12?

It's my understanding UC will not fire Wes becasue the buyout would be ahuge impact! So what's the plan going forward?

What's the plan. you ask? I say honor his contract, and give Miller one more year. Meantime, the powers that be at UC should vigorously search for a new coach, and be ready to make him an offer if things don't turn around.

I remember when Bruce Pearl was available, I was hoping UC would have taken a hard look at him.

Wes will be with us for at least next year because of the contract and list of incoming recruits. I wouldn't be suprised to see some attrition from returning and incoming players. I personally have seen enough and am convinced that he can recruit but can't develop or in-game coach worth a crap. I thoroughly believe if Sean Miller or any other number of coaches had this group of athletes it would be a top 25 team.

Right now it's a complete mess and I don't see how it improves. There is no order or consistency to anything they do. I believe the guys stay with it because Miller is easy on them and the losses are too easily accepted. We keep hearing, "we just need to keep working and things will get better". NO THEY WON'T! Something is radically wrong.

Because of NIL and the portal you can swap out several players each year and stil compete. That's what Texas Tech did and those dudes play together like they've been on the same team for years. Look at Pat Kelsey at Louisville. There are many other examples across college BB. Good experienced coaches can make it happen in this environment. Miller has not.

I like Miller's energy and I really was excited for this year. What a bummer this has become.

The problem is really simple. Three letters NIL. You have professional athletes now and not student athletes. Each one is now playing according to how they perceive the Cincy Reigns pay scale to be. We have no Bobbly Brannens, or Eric Hicks, or Conner Baldwin to remind these guys what playing for the C paw means. They are only playing for the money until they can go to the next level. And Miller has no clue how to navigate all of these egos.

Agreed and while they may have the talent coming in playing for Miller is not going to help them get to the next level.

Agree! We do have Rayvon & Tyler Mckinley who are Cincinnati natives! Both played some HS ball in the Cincy Area. I was/am hoping they would lead the charge to regaining UC Pride!

Of course Rayvon has to be able to make his way in the lineup! Which leads me to my next question. With the current TEAM having multiple offensive woes. How can MILLER justify not giving the young man a chance to play???? The team scored 52pts on Saturday! and allowed BYU to score 80pts!

So how can Miller justify not playing Rayvon who was known coming into UC for his scoring ability?

You are exactly right. Is anyone asking Wes that question?

For all of you advanced analytics lovers, here's the progression/regression of our roster measured in BPM against top 100 competition.
                  Player 2024 2025 Change
                  Reed 1.3 7.8 6.5
                  Page -0.5 1.5 2.0
                  Day Day 0.0 1.3 1.3
                  Skillings 6.0 6.9 0.9
                  Mitchell 5.0 5.9 0.9
                  Simas 3.2 1.9 -1.3
                  Jizzle 3.0 0.3 -2.7
                  Aziz 4.6 1.0 -3.6
                  Hickman 0.7 -8.0 -8.7
We tailor our offense to Jizzle, Aziz, and Simas. All three have regressed from last year. Reed and Page have shown growth but aren't seeing starter minutes. Despite his recent struggles, Skillings remains our best player and he has improved this year. Hickman is some combination of injured or just not a good fit for our scheme.

Stats just don't show all the things necessary to show who our best player is. Things like being in proper position for passing or rebounding, fighting for loose balls, willingness and knowhow to set a screen, and so much more. I am a BB lover and not a numbers cruncher after the game. There is so much more to making a winning team. I can look out and see a total lack of motivation for teamwork, hard aggressive competing and basic BB IQ. A selfish me first out of control, hero ball player will never be your best player. He will just be a player with some subjectively selective numbers about his game. I have seen only a self-centered change which I would not call an improvement. The game Saturday was winnable heading into the second half. The game was getting away due to some lousy ballhandling, inept defense, stupid shot selection (or failure to release) and no desire to rebound. He was yanked and when he came back in the lead grew much deeper in the hole due to the same garbage play. He was yanked once more and when he did come back the lead was totally beyond reach, but he showed the same level of play. I know folks blamed his eye as it was poked, I blame his mind and heart. Normally I don't like to go this far in reporting what was on the court, but the lack of desire to improve and to become a leader compelled me. This is what Kevin Johnson saw as it is obvious to any watching the game of BB and no stats will show all that. The Cats don't have a best player. I was in CWM's corner all year and yeah, I jumped off the bandwagon. Or you could say the ridiculous style of hero ball permitted pushed me off. I want to jump back on as I love the Cats, but this team isn't UCincinnati, but as I said recently UConfusion. I still hope for a bunch of wins strung together and will down to the last game.

I really just don't see this team as being all that talented. Aziz Bandaogo does not have Big 12 Big man skills. He can throw down an Alley-Oop and stick back a rebound. He can't pass or dribble. Dillon Mitchell I was expecting to be a big addition to this team in the sense that he could work inside a little and step and shoot. He seems to just stand around the perimeter. Page does look like he should get some more playing time. But basically I see no effort to integrate big men into the offense as post players. Aziz just roams the baseline waiting for the lop. The others just stand around. I thought Skillings would get better, but he still is a coin flip. Great Plays followed by screwups. Simas Lukosius is slow and one dimensional. He heaves longs threes and gets hot sometimes. He was getting smoked on defense all night by BYU. Jizzle & Day Day are competent point guards....but the Big 12 has other teams with as much talent. Texas Tech ran them off the floor, BYU shot them off the floor. And like other people, I liked Wes. I thought last year was his first year where I didn't say he is still trying to put the Brannen era behind him...and he came and was competitive in the Big 12. I thought things were going to get better. This league is the deep end of the pool, and you are going to have to have a big man, a good wing and a good point guard to compete. We don't.

well said. the "metrics" are useful, but they're not the end all. the intangibles still make a huge difference, in anything, and everything.

Nothing brings the fellas together quite like hating on statistics.

Maybe someday you guys will make an attempt to understand what you're ranting about. It's amazing how you can have such a firm opinion on something you clearly haven't even tried to learn about. BPM absolutely does measure intangibles and everything that you think it can't. Why do you think Josh Reed leads our team? He doesn't lead in any of the traditional stats.
