UC completes their Mountain West excursion on Tuesday night with a visit to the Huntsman Center to take on Utah in Salt Lake City. The Utes are looking to build on a 22-win season in 23/24 under 4th-year coach Craig Smith and make their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2016. Like the Bearcats, Utah has an uphill battle to navigate en route to achieving that goal as they boast a 11-8 record, 3-5 Big 12 record, #78 NET ranking, and #89 KenPom ranking.

While they failed to snag a marquee win during their soft non-conference schedule (#356 per KenPom), the highlight of their season thus far has been a three-game run in mid-January where they beat Oklahoma St at home (83-62), TCU on the road (73-65), and capped it off with an exhilarating overtime win against rivals BYU (73-72 ) at home.

For UC fans, all eyes will be on the Madsen twins tonight. Gabe Madsen has scored over 1,200 career points at Utah through 3-and-a-half seasons and leads the team with 14.8 ppg this year while slashing 38/32/86. After two semi-productive years at Boston College, Mason Madsen had a bright start to his time as a Ute, but has struggled to find a rhythm during Big 12 play where he has only averaged 3.6 ppg and shot 19% from 3 over 7 games.

Utah boasts quite a bit of size as they played 11 players in their last game against Baylor and 7 of those players were 6'8 or taller. While they are neither a strong offensive (#109 per KenPom) or defensive team (#78), they get to the foul line at a decent rate (3rd in the conference in FTs attempted). However, they have shot a conference-worst 59.2% at the charity stripe over 8 Big 12 games.

They have also been a poor 3-point shooting team during Big 12 play (26.5%), have forced the least amount of turnovers (8.1/game), and have given up the most offensive boards per game (12.1).

Despite their deficiencies, the Utes currently stand as 1.5-point favorites at home.

Needless to say, this game is a must-win for UC as they approach a stretch where 3 of their next 4 games will be played at Fifth Third.

A must win game out west on a week night sets up a low ratings airing with the way the fans are frustrated with the lacksadaisical play. I hope they surprise me when I look at the score tomorrow morning.
Red and Black are more of an Attitude than merely a color combination.

    Intimidate! Dominate! Celebrate!

Must win, indeed -- hey, let's get that W and turn the season around. Not that it matters at the moment, but this would currently be a Q2 road game with the potential for Utah to sneak inside the top 75 of the NET later (78 now -- obviously a win pushes Utah down further, a UC loss moves Utah up but by then it is all irrelevant anyways).

Former WVU interim coach Josh Eilert is on staff.

Some other familiar names in addition to the Madsens:
      - Former ECU big Ezra Ausar who had 24 points and 22 rebounds over two games versus UC two years ago (he averages 11.1 and 4.7)
      - Mike Sharavjamts who played 25 mins for San Francisco in the NIT game a year ago after playing at UD his freshman year (he averages 6.8 and 3.4)
      - Two Baylor transfers, Miro Little and Caleb Lohner (the last played in two games versus UC last year)

Rich Waltz/Pete Gillen on the CBS Sports call.

Oh no, this game is on national television. Since Miller has been the UC coach, UC has lost 62.9% of its nationally televised games. Similar to its home court woes, there is about a 62.9% probability that UC will drop this game. Also, on the season, Utah is a better scoring team, has slightly better rebounding, and they are really big. Check out Utah's starting 5: (6'9" PG, 6'6" SG, 7'1" C, 6'10" PF, and 6'8" SF). Another disadvantage, Miller does NOT play the matchups. Big mistake. Who is James supposed to play? What about Thomas, who will he guard? Mitchell may also be at a disadvantage tonight. Utah will shoot over UC or beat up on them in the paint. Teams that play two bigs have given UC problems all season. However, Miller could play both Aziz and Page at the same time. You never know, it may work. Nah. Miller will not do that.

Building a roster to first compete in the conference. Something to pay attention to for next season. This current UC roster has major limitations.

UC's guard play in the conference has been the worst I have ever seen from any college team. Although Skillings is shooting .438, his defense has taken a step back in the conference. He truly has a problem dealing with screens as all the guards do. It is not their fault. If you are a coach and you see that your players are not good one-on-one defenders, change the defensive scheme to something that is more suitable to their capabilities. Excluding Skillings' 12 points a game, the other three primary outside guys (Simas, James, and Thomas) are only scoring a combined 23.7 points a game and shooting 34.9%. It is hard to win in any conference when the guards do not come to play every game. Do not get me wrong, I am not beating up on the guards. I really feel sorry for them that the game plans and strategies are not employing their skills in more winnable ways.

Two good things here. Utah has not played UC this season. Utah might look at UC's conference record and underestimate them. The second good thing is Shon Abaev made the 2025 McDonalds All-American team. So help may be coming next year.

Welcome to Dunk City. This game features the top two dunking teams in the country. The Bearcats lead the nation with dunks on 17.5% of field goals. Utah is just behind at 17.4%.

That doesn't necessarily mean good offense of course. Both teams are atrocious from midrange, where Utah shoots an abysmal 28%. And both teams are terrible from the free throw line, where Utah converts just 62%. The Utes play fast with a top 75 tempo, top 75 three point rate, and the highest assist rate in the country. But they are also susceptible to turnovers, coughing it up at an above average rate.

6'9" sophomore Keanu Dawes has been their best player per BPM both for the whole season and in conference, but he has been limited to around 16 minutes per game. Big men Wahlin, Keller, and Ausar are also having strong conference campaigns, though Keller hasn't played much recently because he can't stop fouling. Former Bearcat Gabe Madsen leads the team in minutes but he has been their worst player in conference, shooting just 19% from three at high volume and sporting a negative defensive BPM. Veteran guards Erickson and Sharavjamts are also playing significant minutes with negative BPM.

They have 11 guys playing 10+ minutes in conference. Only four of them are under 6'9". But they can't seem to find the right combination as their best performers are young guys stuck on the bench while the veterans struggle. These two teams have a lot in common.

A huge fight broke out in the crowd of the VCU vs St. Louis game delaying the end so CBSSN can't switch over to the UC game.

It's unfortunate, he's been injury prone his entire career.
