"Chad Brendel listed his educated guesses (in addition to Aziz, Simas & Fredrick, who are moving on)

    Likely gone: Betsey, Page, Skillings

    50-50: Griffith, Jizzle, Mitchell, Reed

More likely to stay (but no guarantees): Thomas, McKinley, Hickman (with waiver)

    No clue: Dzellat"

I believe the majority of us have been feeding off SWilsonp4 post.

No actual knowledge here but Tyler Betsey, particularly in this era, definitely fits the profile of someone who would likely end up in the portal. Hope he stays but not confident in him or really most anyone running it back in Clifton for 2025-26.

Sorry for confusion or concern, but I saw the prediction post, then a lot of clamour for Reed, no one missing Page, and no clamour for Betsey, who I hope sticks around one more season then off to the NBA.

No apology necessary, hope we do not lose Betsy or Reed.

If Betsey enters the portal it’s because he doesn’t feel the coaching staff will develop him or won’t use him effectively. He has a lot of potential but needs more experience and development. If he doesn’t feel this coaching staff furnishes that I can understand wanting to move on.

Indiana guard Gabe Cupps is going portaling. Former 4 star recruit from Centerville who picked IU over OSU. Forced to play more than he should have two years ago to IU injuries, sat this year with an injury. Probably will go to UD, but worth mentioning because he's local. A-10 would be a better fit than Big 12.

Betsey reminds me of AJ McGinnis. Supposedly a good shooter but it doesn't show in games outside of a couple hot stretches. One dimensional and a poor defender. He needs to develop a more all around game or make close to 40% to be a major contributor on a top 50 team. I'm not sure that's going to happen in one offseason.

Not far off sedz. But how much can be attributed to a poor coaching scheme? How much to a lack of effort by him to improve? More rhetorical than anything. For a 4 star recruit he probably did not live up to expectations. Why not is the question.

Yeah, hard to say what the problem is. I just don't think he's irreplaceable. There will be hundreds of players like Betsey in the portal who have potential but didn't reach it for whatever reason.

I'll take any player back who wants to stay. But the guys I most want to keep are the ones who are proven producers at this level. And to me, "proven" is not subjective - it's measureable in BPM against top 100. Mitchell, Skillings, Reed, and Day Day are a solid core of 4+ BPM players to build around (potentially Griffith too). Sounds like Skillings is likely gone, but hopefully we can keep 3 of them and add a couple more in the portal.

I found an interesting trend while taking a look at the 247 top 100 rankings for the class of 2024 (Betsey's class).

The Big 12 had 8 players ranked within the top 43 spots of the class. All of these players had productive freshman seasons and were either starters or major rotation players on their respective teams.

Starting at #50 (followed by Betsey at #53), the next 9 Big 12 freshmen all had significantly less productive seasons. Two of these freshmen (McKinley and McCarty at Houston) redshirted. The one semi-exception was #99 Amier Ali at Arizona State who averaged 5.5 ppg and 2.9 rpg over 18.6 mpg and started 3 games.

I share all this to state that Betsey didn't underachieve with respect to his peers. It's a tough task to play in one of the best conferences in America as a true freshman - especially with this being the last year of 5th-year Covid Seniors.

Betsey is a much better player and recruit than McGinnis. I think don't you can even judge the guy on his play in college because he wasn't on the court enough this season.

Good insight. It's tough for freshmen to be significant contributors in major conferences.

Still, there were 15 freshman in the Big12 who averaged at least 10 mpg in conference with a positive BPM (all 1.0 or higher). Betsey was one of 5 with a negative BPM. I'd say he underachieved.

Which means he should be viewed as a project. I'm fine with having guys like that on the roster. But if we want to be a top 25 team, we need proven producers or top 50 recruits who are more likely to produce as freshmen.

Betsey is taller than McGinnis, and I think that's where the higher profile comes from. Their games appeared very similar to me.
