  • The Crown tourney

I was reading about the mix-up concerning UC-Riverside getting an invite to the NIT, not knowing about it, and accepting an invitation to the Crown. Here from The Athletic:

“Big West Conference commissioner Dan Butterly stepped in and got UC Riverside a bit more time to work through the options. Mallette had to clear things with his president, general counsel and talk with his head coach. There were travel arrangements to figure out. There was a buyout that needed to be sorted out with the CBI; a tournament that charges an entry fee. Mallette declined to disclose the cost of the buyout.”

Has anybody read about teams paying an Entry Fee for playing in The Crown?

I don't think there is one. It's a FOX Sports promotion limited to schools from conferences with FOX media contracts i.e Big XII, PAC12 remnants and the BE. For the Big XII that includes ASU, UC, UCF, CU and UU. I think I mistakenly said in another thread that Ok St was one of the teams in it and they actually were not invited and took a NIT bid.

Wes Miller on which players will be playing. A bit sketchy. Who will play for Cincinnati Bearcats basketball in Las Vegas Crown?

Is it me or did anyone else notice that basically, all of the Big 12 teams see to be in the same side of the bracket?

Chad Brendel stated tonight that he expects everyone who played in KC to play in the Crown.

$$$$ money = players. It just depends on how well they will try.

I'd be interested to know what the payout structure looks like for the players. Like do they get a bulk amount for the whole thing or do they get paid per game? Survive and get cash..

It might have been posted but I didn't see it, but did UC get a NIT bid and chose to play in the Crown?

Well, we didn’t make The Dance, but there’s still Bearcats basketball on tap this week. The CBC starts today with four games (left side of the bracket). Utah versus Butler leads off. Here are some articles regarding the B12 teams participating. The main topic, both here and among the other fans, is “who actually will play” for each team. The Utes, now operating under interim head coach Josh Eilert (familiar territory for him), with nine players in the portal, most (if not all) of whom are expected to play.

                      https://www.sltrib.com/sports/utah-u...players-enter/

That’s not the case for Arizona State, who are down to seven scholarship players named neither Jayden Quaintance (knee) nor Joson Sanon (headed to St. John’s).

                      https://www.azcentral.com/story/spor...n/82729825007/

Here’s an interesting quote from a Colorado site:

“The Buffs aren’t the best team in the field, but they don’t really care about winning or losing. Tad Boyle wants to see what he has. He’s going to play the kids, test out some stuff for next season, and decide from there his offseason recruiting strategy. The extra practices in March are a nice bonus for the coaching staff.” [I guess that would conflict with the players’ hopes of claiming some portion of the $500K in overall NIL cash.]

UCF are the fifth B12 team. It’s hard to discern which Knights players will see action. Seven have hit the portal. I wonder what the future holds for Johnny Dawkins. UCF is in a difficult spot recruiting wise. They view (and present) themselves as a football-predominant school. Basketball is a mere afterthought.

As DePaul are buried in the depths of the Chicago sports rooting interests, I couldn’t find any articles of note, aside from a short piece from two weeks ago announcing that the Blue Demons would participate in the CBC.

I did see, though, that four players have entered the portal, all of whom averaged at least 15 min/g, none of whom averaged more than 8.9 ppg. Chris Holtmann really spread out the playing time. The Demons’ four leading scorers are all guards.

KenPom ranks DePaul at #110 nationally (#110 offensive efficiency and #139 defensive efficiency). They play slightly below average tempo and faced an extremely weak non-conference schedule (#357). The Demons went 2-10 away and 1-1 on a neutral floor, both in the BE tourney. The tourney win was over Georgetown, whom they already had beaten twice. If the Bearcats can’t beat this team …

The Utes' starters include portal entrants.

The Crown is a new conference and each of the big conferences were contractually bound to send the top two teams by NET ranking who didn't make the NCAA. We were not offered an NIT bid because we were already set for the Crown before the NIT determined their bids.

Half: UT 46, Butler 42. Lots of mindless heat checking going on. That's working, because neither team is guarding anyone.

The Utes coughed up a 12-point lead and lost on a layup at :03.2. A Bulldog drove down the lane, beating Gabe Madsen from the free throw line. Final: Butler, 86-84.
