  • Georgia State 11/7 7:00 pm ESPN+

Georgia State (0-1) opened their season at Eastern Michigan (who we play on 11/26) Monday evening and lost 71-49. The Panthers were only down 55-47 with 6:39 remaining, but failed to score again until there were 29 seconds left in the game - at which point they were down by 20 points. GSU shot 29.3% from the field, 30.4% from 3, and had 17 turnovers for the evening.

The Panthers were picked to finish 11th out of 14 teams in the Sun Belt this season after finishing 14-19 in 24/25 under 4th-year head coach Jonas Hayes (twin brother of ex-NBA player and UGA standout Jarvis Hayes).

They are led by 6'5 sophomore guard Jelani Hamilton, a preseason 2nd team All-Sun Belt selection, who averaged 10.8 ppg and 3.5 rpg as a freshman. Their only other returnee from last year's squad who saw game action is 6'1 junior guard Malachi Brown who averaged 7.9 ppg, 3.6 rpg, and 3.4 apg while starting 31 of 33 games.

Their vast array of newcomers have extremely limited D1 playing experience and are primarily comprised of D2 and JUCO transfers along with a few freshmen.

They are currently ranked 311th nationally by Bart Torvik and 321st by KenPom.

Wish to see improved defense, rebounding and passing. They are playing softies so they must control.

Here is the UC preview https://gobearcats.com/news/2025/11/...a-friday-night

Terry Nelson will be back on the call (TV), while Steve Logan joins Hoard on the radio (notably, Hoard did UC/Utah late night Saturday, Bengals Sunday, UC hoops Monday and now both the Bengals and UC football are off this weekend).

The aforementioned coach, Jonas Hayes, is in his 4th year at Georgia State after serving as a Xavier assistant and then leading the Musketeers to the 2022 NIT title as interim head coach.

Hayes' staff includes his brother, Cincinnati native Allen Payne and former OU Bobcat Stevie Taylor (who I believe UC recruited at one point), among others.

Not sure I like playing a Hayes’ coached team before
the X game. All the more scouting info for X.

I'm not sure there's much of a connection from the staff Hayes was on and the current staff at X. Total make over with Richard Pitino coming in over there.
