There will now be 12 games in the playin round. 24 teams will compete to reach the field of 64.
The NCAA has initiated the final steps to expand the men's and women's basketball tournaments to 76 teams, with sources telling ESPN that clearing the final steps needed is just a formality.

Seems like most are not in favor of this, but we'll still watch so it will be fine when it's all said and done.

This will mean that more power conference teams will be selected which means more money. However, it would also mean that a team like UC would have made it to the watered-down tournament. If this format was set last year, it may have saved Miller's job.

This makes a lot of sense -- Wichita will host opening NCAA Tournament 2027, 2028 games
In addition to selecting Wichita to host the Opening Round, the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee selected its chair for the 2027-28 season, approved the principles and procedures for selection/seeding/bracketing, and made decisions regarding the metrics that assist with the selection and seeding process.

"Wichita and Dayton, Ohio, which has served as the host city for the start of the tournament since 2001, both will host three games each day on the Tuesday and Wednesday after Selection Sunday."
