Big East, Aresco secure spot for football champ

Collegiate Commisioners create seventh bowl game:

Big East commissioner Mike Aresco said Thursday that "we will all have access to the playoff system," when the current Bowl Championship Series format ends at the completion of the 2013 season.

Led by Aresco, the collegiate commissioners will create a seventh bowl game that will be added to the national semifinal (`Final Four') rotation. The bowl will match the highest-ranked team from among the Big East and four other conferences (MAC, Conference USA, Mountain West, Sun Belt) against a likely second-place team from the PAC-12 or Big 12.

I guess that's better than nothing. I would hope the BE champ is higher rated than any of the other conferences. I'm guessing maybe the Cotton Bowl is that game?

Here's USA Today's take on this. Considering the shaking foundation that has beset the BE over the past 2 years, this is about as good a development as the conference leaders could expect.

The Big East is actually in a good spot right now... all things considered.

The Big 10, ACC and Pac 12 are not doing well this year. The Big East has 3 undefeated ranked teams, and we are in a contract year. If Rutgers, UL and UC only lose to each other and one of them ends undefeated and wins a BCS bowl... there will be a good bit of interest in the Big East.

The upcoming contract deal is huge, and the Big East couldn't be having a better year heading into the contract negotiations. ESPN is releasing a lot of Pro-BigEast articles lately, probably to appease our new commish. However, I hope we end up with NBC. We could get a lot of face time. Up grade our facilities, and the like.

To sum it up, here a list of potentially good things the Big East has going for it:

1) Schools in top 25 TV markets.
2) Future recruiting in all of the football hot beds (NJ, PA, OH, FL, TX... etc)
3) Potentially large contract for facilities expansion. (I am sure NBC realizes they need to invest to facilitate a competitive product)

People are confirming what Brett McMurphy reported yesterday. There will be 6 Championship Bowls. The BE/non-AQs is guaranteed a spot for the highest ranked champion.

Couple of things, we have to win the Big East AND be higher ranked than any other non AQ conference champions to get the bid. This would seem to put us good position for a shot at the bid every year if we keep wining the conference title.

While this is not ideal Aresco and company seem to be ok with it and with 6 and not 7 bowls this is probably about as much as we can hope for.

Well....at least we have a shot unlike UK or IU football. The Big East Champ should be higher ranked than any of the other conference champs or I'd at least hope that is the case.

The issue UC needs to be more concerned about is perception.

With the new setup, UC (and the Big East) have been cast as equals with the MAC and C-USA. It'll be spun to recruits that way on both sides -- with "Power 5" recruiters telling their kids that UC is small potatoes and other "Best of the Rest" recruiters telling their kids that they can have the same shot at a national title that UC could give them.\

You nailed it!!! Perception is everything now and the results of the last 8 years mean nothing. The BE has just been put on common ground with everyone else competing for 3-star talent. UC's teams have worked hard to earn quick respect in the BE and now have been kicked back to C-USA.

Not hardly. Will those other 4 conferences have the TV revenue the Big East will? Nope. If the Big East dominates and are in the major bowl year after year that becomes a selling point even over some of the Power 5 conferences. If we upgrade facilities, keep our coaches and bring in millions in TV and bowl revenue, we will be more than fine.

People are vastly overestimating the value of the nBE's TV deal. The conference is now associated more closely with C-USA, MAC, and the Sun Belt than any of the "Power 5" conferences.

Why would anyone assume that the TV rights would be significantly greater than any of their new "peers?"

One reason is that it is the last negotiation for TV rights for a very long time in college football. All the other conferences have long term deals.

But there are still several networks looking to add to their entertainment schedules...NBC Sports, Fox Sports, TBS, and even ESPN. If they do not get college football now, they will have to wait 7-8 years for the contracts to cycle through again. Low supply equals high demand. High demand equal more dollars.

The fact that the Big East will be able to offer games every week in all time zones will be appealing to networks as well. Not to mention that the Big East has a team in almost all of the large TV markets throughout the nation.

All this adds to a very good pay day for the Big East.
