Aresco is not a stupid man. He knows that the league's reputation and, more importantly, its monetary value are dependent upon UC and UConn staying. There was no way he was going to let any school take a lump sum, so that he can use any balance as leverage in future exit negotiations. There's a good chance that neither UC nor UConn will realize the full $25-30M (given that those are accurate estimates).
As far as UC is concerned, Babcock knows it's important for the Cats to fare extremely well during whatever time they spend in the (Insert Conference Name Here). The ACC (and possibly the B12) have to be more impressed with UC than anyone else, both on and off the court. All the school can do is state its best case. Any other future home conference will decide whether it's good enough.
