  • OT - Colerain Football

Colerain used to send multiple players to UC and other D1 schools, but have completely collapsed. The most recent HC, Carl Huber, just stepped down after his two winless seasons. He essentially had no talent.

Saw that. I'm not local anymore but where did those kids and coaches end up? Seems like they went to Lakota, Princeton and Winton Woods? Am I right?

The kids haven't really moved. Colerain had a very active elementary age program to teach and grow talent that fed into the high school. The kids there today don't have that strong base, and some of the naturally better talent moved to another school district.

I know what is going on at CHS. We do have very poor training facilities (weight room is an old shed with no bathroom), and the two best players from last year's team transferred to open enrollment high schools.

Everything is cyclical. The Cards will be back!

Colerain used to have a really good pee-wee feeder system. They also seemed to get the good ones from the Northwest HS side of the District.

Perhaps their old coach will come back after he retires from UC. Maybe not HC but an advisor and motivator.

You're the second person I've seen today bring this idea up.

He does love the school, but he may wan to enjoy retirement. Not being HC will give him time, but you know there might be pressure for him to go HC.

It's all about the Ohio teachers pension at this point.

The maximum pension any STRS or PERS person can get is $400K per year. Your pension is based now upon your five highest years where it used to be the three highest. At O$U, he was making $750K per year. He has already maxed out, so money is not the issue. The problem is, Kerry left 20 years ago, and most of the young players at CHS have never heard of him.

Also, we have had some problem with our "Little Cards"..... embezzlement issues, I believe, so that program is weak.

Somebody in the management of that program got "sticky fingers", and set the program back 3 years.

Chris, since the NWLSD is working towards merging Colerain and Northwest, after building essentially a new Colerain campus on-site, when would you anticipate completion of the project? I imagine that would solve the athletics facilities issues.

My other question is, did the creep who stole from the kids pay a penal price?

The plan is to build a "Super Colerain HS" on the site of the soccer fields at CHS, with both high schools merged. The cost is $220 million, and the last bond issue lost 3 to 1, so I don't see that happening.

Other ideas being floated are merging grades 10-12, and using the current Northwest HS as a 9th grade school, but that is a far drive for kids who live in the southern part of the district. Our district goes basically from Cheviot in the south, to Fairfield in the North. I even made the suggestion that we ask Mike Brown (net worth $4.9 billion according to Forbes) to pay for the school, and we would name it Paul Brown High School. Reality then set in, so that idea was not pursued.

Whatever we do, lots of people are going to be unhappy, so we are taking it slow.

In regards to the thief, that was probably 8 years ago, and as I recall, the thief got probation, but the program closed down for a year, and has never been the same since that happened.

$220m to build a new high school !?!?! I assume the land (soccer fields) is already owned so the $220m is simply the cost to design and build the new school. That seems like an insanely high cost.

Not really, as they want a billion dollars to put a roof over TQL Stadium. $220 M is a lot of dough, but it will be state of the art, and BIG!

P.S. Do you think Mike Brown might cough up the loot?
