As much as I wish that were true, I just don't believe that it is. There is not a single program out there that can withstand replacing a great coach with a mediocre or poor one without sacrificing their level of success. And finding the right coach, unfortuntately, is not a science. You could end up with another Brian Kelly, or you could end up with a Kragthorpe. I'm pretty sure Louisville thought their program was bigger than the coach, and their program was on MUCH stronger footing at that time than our is now.

That is why I say its worth paying Kelly at least 3M. The ramifications are too much to fathom. I think they could find the money - especially when that entity is bringing far more to the school. Next player in is not as difficult as next coach in. For people to even think so is ludicrous. Everyone is saying why doesn't Kelly speak up. I also say why doesn't Mike Thomas speak up and state that everything we can do we are doing? The first on the list is paying Kelly and his staff what they are worth on the market not the BEast conference that for some reason underpays its coaches but wants to be looked at in the same breath as the SEC, Big10, Pac10 and Big12. If you pay barely over MAC money then that is what you will be perceived. Rumor has it that even Patterson just got 2M. We need to quit messing around as this opportunity may never come again. We have momentum from a program basis and to let that go would be foolish. The program is bigger than any given player, but it isn't bigger than Brian Kelly. The program is woefully underfunded, plays in inadequate facilities, has too small a season ticket base, and no traditional fan support of note. I think most people are kidding themselves if they think UC Football can continue to be relevant in Cincinnati without either Brian Kelly on the sidelines or someone equally as talented (read: top-20 coach).
Just my opinion, but a whiff on the head coaching choice to replace Brian Kelly will set the program back a decade, easily. A string of 2 or 3 bad years will kill casual fan interest in the UC brand (the same casual fan interest that the school needs to go buy season tickets for 2010 and beyond) and there simply isn't the alumni and traditional fan support to keep even Nippert Stadium full -- to say nothing of expansion plans. Building back the casual fan interest is difficult enough in the best of conditions, and fickle-Cincinnati (of the "what have you done for me lately" sports crowd) makes it 10 times harder.
And, when you look at the schedule UC has already picked out for itself (including @Miami, FL - @OSU - @VT in 2012), they're going to need a great hire just to keep above water.
Eventually, that stadium would be sold out before the season starts as season tickets will be in hot demand. Starting over again I agree. If the same success is not there within 2 years the program will go bust. Continuity is everything. Come on UC. Where are you in this?Last edited by jadam222; 12-03-2009, 02:58 PM.Comment

I don't think UC is at the level where we can survive a failed coaching change, but I would hope we were. That's what I meant by my original statement. As much as I wish that were true, I just don't believe that it is. The reason for my answer was to show that there is no realistic reason to look forward to a UC loss at Pitt.God works miracles... The lil brother we adopted that had cancer, his cancer is gone... Congrats mitch stone... You inspired us!!! - Darrin WilliamsComment

Darling you got to let me know
Should I stay or should I go?
If you say that you are mine
I’ll be here ’til the end of time
So you got to let me know
Should I stay or should I go?
Always tease tease tease
You’re happy when I’m on my knees
One day is fine, next day is black
So if you want me off your back
Well come on and let me know
Should I stay or should I go?
Should I stay or should I go now?
Should I stay or should I go now?
If I go there will be trouble
An’ if I stay it will be double
So come on and let me know!
This indecision’s bugging me
If you don’t want me, set me free
Exactly who’m I’m supposed to be
Don’t you know which clothes even fit me?
Come on and let me know
Should I cool it or should I blow?Comment

No he doesn't have to lie. He could have kept with the whole no answer policy which he had for a while but no he decided to comment. He said that he is staying. BK did not/does not have to lie. He can say he is staying (which he did) or he can simply not say anything (which he did for quite a while)If he came out and said, "If ND calls, I'm gone. Screw Cincinnati" he would:
-1- Ruin recruiting at UC, whether he stays or goes
-2- Ruin his bargaining position with ND and UC
He MUST lie, whether he's talking about staying or going. Not to mention that anyone is free to change jobs if they want (so long as the contract is bought out). If I quit my job, I'm not a "traitor" to my company.
If BK leaves, I will wish him well, and hope UC gets a good replacement.Comment

He said he is staying because of the overwhelming distraction the issue had become. In order to calm that down and get the team re-focused on Pitt, he said he was staying. If that turns out to be a lie, I understand why he would lie. He has to. Its the nature of the beast. No he doesn't have to lie. If my boss came to me and asked if I was looking for another job, I'd lie my butt off and say no. If I didn't, I would be risking my job. College football coaches lie to keep their team motivated, to keep recruits coming in and to keep their bargaining power.Comment

I hate that those guys have got to be making money on their ads for all of the traffic that is going their way. Same with that silly little leprechaun (Sean O'Shea) at irishcentral.com.
I can't wait til this is over with...either way.@mrgalati / @RepOfCincinnatiComment

Clearly, I was just being a smartass, but before anyone comes in and says that his weight (rotundness) has nothing to do with his coaching abilities, here's an opinion that disagrees:
