Coach Kelly Situation

It's cold hard facts.
Most (not all, but most) schools who lose a head coach do not recovery quickly. Tulane turned back into a doormat after their undefeate season when Tommy Bowden bolted for Clemson. Louisville went to total crap when Kragthorpe replaced Petrino. Florida dropped to outright mediocrity when Zook replaced Spurrier. West Virginia has been middling to above-average since Rich Rod was replaced by Stewart. Hawaii's a .500 team without June Jones.
They need to hit a second head-coaching home run in less than a decade if they want to keep the momentum building and do things like improve facilities, keep attendance and interest high, and continue to hold a spot in an other wise pro sports and high school sports town.
I hope I'm wrong, but history is not on the program's side if Kelly departs. You can bury your head in the sand and pretend it isn't true, but it doesn't change the facts involved.
At this point, the only way I foresee Kelly NOT going is if he isn't offered the job. I highly doubt they'd bring him in for an interview if they didn't plan on making on offer. Just IMO.#41
You can give it a patriotic name, but it still sucks.Comment

Do we have any for sure confirmation on this?
And if so why would they interview him in NY? Is the pope in town or something and ND needs to get his approval???Comment

Here is a BK theory I do not think has been discussed. His biggest annoyance at UC has been the constant rumors and questions about him leaving. I am sure it has also lost him recruits. What better way for an Irish Catholic from the East Coast to prove his loyalty to UC than to be offered the ND job AND TURN IT DOWN? That would end the BK speculation about other jobs better than anything else ever could. I hope I am right.Comment

He has to interview for the job. It will help with recruiting FOR UC, where he will stay. It keeps the program in the main news. Unfortunately ESPN won't regularly talk about the accomplishments of this team. ESPN doesn't have time to interrupt televising what a great person Tim Tebow is, how many people Tiger slept with and what's wrong with the NE Pat's.
By keeping his name in the coaching carousel then signing a larger deal at UC, it opens recruiting doors for him that were previously kept shut.Comment

Oh boy! That's not good. I've always believed that Kelly going to ND was going to be based solely on ND making the offer.......It's time to prepare for goodbyes.Comment

Why? Presumably a college student would know how to use the football grid as a guide.RickComment

For some reason I dont think ND would offer anyone the job and make it public without 110% assurance that said candidate would accept. Here is a BK theory I do not think has been discussed. There's no way Notre Dame would let him coach the Sugar Bowl -- they need him out on the recruiting trail for the next 3 weeks, not prepping for a bowl game.#41

To be honest at this point I would be shocked if BK is on the sidelines in N.O. Jan 1. For instance if he was staying a new deal would be announced today before he even sits down to talk to another team. UC should already have a deal prepared for BK to sign. Now lets say they do and he won't sign until after he speaks to ND then he's gone, either way folks I think we should all just prepare for the worst. PLEASE coach prove me wrong, but I strongly feel he's already gone.Bearcat fan since 91

Here is one thought on this matter. What if Kelly was going to "entertain" the ND folks by listening, but in reality he is setting things up so that he can then say he is not interested in the job. He can they use that for recruits saying that he turned down ND, because UC was a much better fit for not just Kelly and his family but also for the recruit he is talking to? Also, I think it makes sense to talk to other schools to find out your worth.
Personally, I think he is staying.Comment
