Perhaps I'm just peculiar, but I belive being ranked as the No. 5 team in the nation could be considered recognition.

There is nothing wrong with the UC band that some more musicians won't cure. Double the size of that band and all will be well.As I was sitting in the pavilion this year, it occurred to me that the placement of the band is poor. Why is the band in a position where they are facing away from 2/3 of the people in the stands? Why don't they sit with the students behind the end zone so the sound will project into the stadium?Comment

That would be easier with band scholarships. My understanding is UC issues no band schollys. What they have are private endowments and very limited in number. Also if CCM didn't discourage band participation. As the program continues to grow, so will the band, IMO.Comment

There's also the fact that tOSU's band is all brass and percussion, which make significantly more noise than woodwinds do.Comment

I'm also convinced that it's nearly impossible for any band to be heard through all of Nippert... when WVU brought their entire band, I couldn't hear them at all when they played. Given I was in the student section and they were tucked in the north corner of the stands, but their band is huge and generally very loud.
Has anyone seen Ohio University's marching band? UC's band used to do that stuff back in the 50's, 60's, and 70's. It'd be great if we went back to that style.Comment

Is there something new? As of now, I don't think anyone has any clue what's going to happen but everyone is just throwing names out and riding the story. I guess we'll finally find out some real news in the next few days.Comment

The marching 110 is awesome, the best band show I have ever seen live.I'm also convinced that it's nearly impossible for any band to be heard through all of Nippert... when WVU brought their entire band, I couldn't hear them at all when they played. This site is reporting Stoops is probably next Irish coach, and that Brian Kelly is not even an option anymore. Good news.

Hey guys. I don't post very often but wanted to give my thoughts on the situation.
First, I want to say that I believe he'll stay. I think it certainly helps that Notre Dame seems willing and obviously capable of paying Bob Stoops whatever he would want to come there. Brian Kelly may be, and in my opinion is, a better coach that Stoops, but from a name recognition standpoint, Stoops has him beat in that regard.
Now, if something falls through with Stoops, Ferentz, or whomever else they pursue and the job winds up "sliding" to Kelly and he does in fact leave, I believe our program is in 10x better shape then it was when Kelly came in and it will make it easier to recover from the loss of him.
For starters, we will have the upgraded practice facilities. We are now selling out home games like never before. Season ticket sales are increasing every year. We have some good young talent on board and more coming. Now granted, Kelly's departure could effect many or all of the things mentioned above.
Bottom line...I'd love to see Kelly stick around, and believe he will. However, what he's done to escalate this program are amazing. Mike Thomas has given me no reason to believe that he won't hire the right guy to keep the momentum going if he does bolt.Comment

My high school band director was from tOSU and he called woodwinds "ornaments", even though he was a woodwind player himself. He configured our HS marching band so that the brass was closest to the stands, woodwinds to the rear. He called this formation "blowing it up their noses".
If UC's band were all brass and percussion, the 175 pieces we now field would be lots louder and more impressive.
I played in UC's marching band four decades ago and we were composed of about 50% CCM students and 50% walk-ons. In concert formation, we sounded like a million bucks; very impressive. However, our marching skills were not quite up to big time standards. The Julliard types were not very familiar with the concepts of marching. We walk-ons referred to ourselves as "the University of Cincinnati High School Marching Band".
But, we sounded really good. There was a Maynard Ferguson style trumpet player named Kenny Welch that put stingers on the end of The Star Spangled Banner that sounded like a steam-powered piccolo and would raise the hair on the back of one's neck.Last edited by UCEE73; 11-29-2009, 09:34 AM.Comment

I'll second that - I'm about 3/4 of the way up in the 119/120 area and I never saw or heard the W. VA band.I'm also convinced that it's nearly impossible for any band to be heard through all of Nippert... when WVU brought their entire band, I couldn't hear them at all when they played. I like the idea of all horns. The woodwinds are more for concerts anyway, where the acoustics balance things out. Outside playing calls for in-your-face sound.Comment
