Just my two cents on all this.. UC just won back to back championships in one of the greatest games I have ever witness.
Put all this rumor talk behind us, and let's celebrate the FACT that Cincinnati just won a championship!Comment

on a similar note, is it (un)common for coach's to put stipulations on offers? what i'm getting at is do you think BK could had possibly told nd that he would take the job - unless UC makes the NC (or any specific bowl for example)? just something that popped in my head.Comment

Just posted from FootballCoachScoop:
Notre Dame:
Again, FootballCoachScoop was the FIRST TO REPORT (Also the only to report) that Brian Kelly (Cincinnati Head Football) will NOT be the next Head Coach
for the Irish, according to our sources.
This site does post a lot of rumors, but as I said before, they typically get it right on absolutes. When they report who will be the new coach, they are right. They're putting their rep on the line big time by continuing to post that Kelly will not be at ND.Comment

Notre Dame:
Sources tell us that Cincinnati Head Coach Brian Kelly will NOT be the next Head Coach. We have been told the extension at Cincinnati has been
completed, but not signed. Our sources have confirmed that there is an offer on the table for Brian Kelly to be the next Head Coach of the Irish (December
2). According to our sources, Brian Kelly's contract extension with Cincinnati is finalized but not signed. FootballCoachScoop was the FIRST TO REPORT
(November 19) that Brian Kelly (Cincinnati Head Coach) was no longer a candidate for the Irish.
This is an even earlier post from CoachScoop. Seems they are back and forth and have no idea.Comment

The only way what they're saying makes sense is if you believe it Kelly himself won't accept the ND offer and doesn't consider himself a candidate.Notre Dame:

You can give it a patriotic name, but it still sucks.Comment

BK has turned down Tennessee already... so you can take that off the listLet's think about this logically. BK said that there are about 10-12 jobs that are better than UC. To me those would be USC, Florida, Texas, Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State, Florida State, Penn State, Georgia, Miami (FL), and Nebraska. You could make an argument for several others as well as arguments against some I have included. Let's say you include Iowa, Tennessee, and Wisconsin to the argument. Which of these schools would have potential openings?
USC, Florida, Texas, Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, and Iowa all have arguably the best coaches in college and they aren't going anywhere in the near future.
LSU, Oklahoma, Miami (FL), and Wisconsin all have coaches who wouldn't leave, save for maybe their alma maters or one of the 7 previous jobs.
Florida St already has a replacement. Michigan, Nebraska, and Tennessee just hired a coach. Penn State has a replacement for when Paterno retires/dies.
Realistically the only job available on that list is Notre Dame (possibly Michigan if Rich Rod doesn't get things together). So from BK's stand point, if he turns down ND or doesn't get offered the job, this may be his last chance to "move up" for quite a while. He would be silly not to consider it if ND is interested.Comment

If you think of this situation in terms of raw success...how can you leave a program that you have won back to back conference titles with and are in serious contention for a national title game??? I know Notre Dame has the money, but I would really, really hope that BK has built an emotional connection to this city and university and he knows that the University of Cincinnati will do everything they can to help him and this program grow. Obviously my opinion means little in this circumstance, but I would like to believe that BK has too much Bearcat PRIDE to just leave us for a "greener pasture."Comment

Kelly to UC confirmed!!!!!!
Kelly to ND confirmed!!!!
Kellly to Nebraska confirmed!!!
We can only wait to see tomorrow...
If it happens I can't complain. If it doesn't I will be stoked. Let's cross our fingers like we did on the Texas kick and hope it comes up different.
Don't...I repeat don't...demonize Kelly either way...it's been so much fun...and it's all his fault.Comment

The Cost of Success
I have no difficulty being critical if, in fact, BK told his players, "I'm not going anywhere!" and ultimately does. Call me old fashioned, but I believe in the value of one's integrity and that words mean something. "Situational ethics" are the refuge of the weak!Comment

Of course, the rumors were definitely on the minds of the players, and they came out pretty soft in the first half. So, it may have been important in terms of winning the game to say it. Not good, but he didn't go on the public public record. And it probably saved the game a little bit.
Besides that, I can't really fault Kelly for entertaining any interest, or even leaving. CMU and GVSU are both holding their own quite well these days.
I completely agree with Bobestes analysis. There aren't many good jobs opening anytime soon, we've gone through a pretty thorough period of change lately in CF. But I'll add that the list of what there is left to do at UC is getting much shorter from an on the field perspective:
1. Win a BCS game
2. Make the national championship game
3. Win the national championship
That's it. Kelly may be cocky enough to think he can get to this point in 5 years at ND. But the things that take longer, building a program, selling out a stadium that's never been close to it for an entire season, overseeing a stadium expansion, these things are longer term projects that might interest him tremendously.
Then again, our entire understanding of these games is skewed. Since many of us, or at least the majority of the people who will attend the BCS game this year, don't have a long perspective on what this really means. I grew up in NC, as a NC State fan. They have one conference championship - ever - yet have sold out a 55k stadium for a decade and invested tens of millions of dollars into facility upgrades. We really don't know how support will stabilize if we don't win the conference again next year. That's a big if that probably will weigh heavily on any decision.Last edited by 08bearcat; 12-06-2009, 01:02 AM.Comment

I feel like many people are overlooking BK, though it may be out of frustration, which I understand...I'm typically an optimist, however BK truly is a diamond in the rough. Not to put down any other up and coming coaches, but the chances of catching another BK realistically isn't likely and it really does scare me to think of what might happen to the program if he leaves. I've seen too many posters say we can just find someone else, but i disagree. BK is a beast at this game, he has a rare combination of confidence, charisma, intelligence, and plenty of intangibles...just my opinion...there's a reason he's a wanted man. I hope the university is willing to do anything they can to keep him. Like others have mentioned, even with so much success, we really aren't an established program, especially if BK leaves. We've only been in this BCS business for 2 years now, which is nice, but it's a far cry from being an established BCS program. Like everyone else, I want stability and consistency, which is exactly what we have right now with BK. I can't see why anyone would be looking at a "Post-Kelly" era...Cincinnati needs his services.Comment
