Coach Kelly Situation

Sumlin's resume worries me -- he only has 2 years of experience as a head coach, and his team is *very* upperclassman heavy (15 starters are JR or SR). Not a lot of his players are playing right now.
Plus, he's been down south for the entire decade. He may have Midwest ties, but he hasn't been in the Midwest since 2000. All of his recruiting classes are dominated by TX/OK/LA kids.
Finally, he's seemed decidedly "un-clutch" as the head coach of Houston (loss to UTEP this year, loss to Rice last year).
All adds up to a guy I'm not really interested in. But, that's just me.
Furthermore, I was at the UCF-Houston game and saw him get completely outcoached by a guy who Knight fans were wanting fired in the weeks leading up to the game. He came in with a top 15 ranking and a Heisman candidate and left with neither.@mrgalati / @RepOfCincinnatiComment

I just realized that the toxic cherry on top of this entire thing is this:
What has BK spent the last three years doing? Building recruiting relationships in the talent-rich Cincinnati market. Beating back the likes of Notre Dame for kids from the GCL, etc.
So, assuming he goes to Notre Dame, our next coach gets the merry task of going head-to-head with Brian Kelly to keep kids in the city. Fun.Comment

As previously noted in this thread, I think keeping Coombs will be a big part in maintaining our edge. Perhaps even bring on a guy like Steve Specht from St. X as a position coach to help him build his resume as well (no idea if the guy has ANY interest in moving to the college ranks).@mrgalati / @RepOfCincinnatiComment

Or Kelly takes Combs to ND.
I think this has clearly moved beyond leverage. On Sunday Morning MT put the maximum of what the University could offer on the table, and BK has been loosening his commitment ever since. ND is really a no win situation. Even if BK does win. Great BK, stay 10 years like lou holtz and still get forced out, your kids are in High School at this point.
The idea that he may have some sort of plan to really snark ND by interviewing and then backing away is kinda a pipe dream. ND probably wouldn't let that happen. Intermediaries have been talking for weeks, and in those weeks BK has been very clear that he was at least interested in hearing what they had to say.
I'm proud of our athletic department for not going over the top to keep him, even though it was their number one priority. We have to live within our means. Our budget is 63/66 schools.
I don't think BK will get the flexibility and heart from a team in south bend that entirely expects to play in the nfl. But I'm probably wrong. He's going to have the in road to all of the GCL coaches in Cincinnati, and that makes me sick. He could even take KC with him.
All the more reason to sell out our allotment to the bowl game very quickly.
I just feel miserable for the kids. 2 coaches in 3 years bolting for 'greener' pastures after they went undefeated in the 2nd toughest league in the country. How much greener can it get? they say.
Clearly BK doesn't think there is any more growth opportunity at UC, that the program will be hemmed in by the structural limitations of the current job in terms of finances and everything else. Those fields were supposed to be done right now, and they weren't, and now the team gets snowy, yucky, cincinnati to practice for the biggest game in the history of the program. The fields cost 5m less than charlie weis' buyout, which ND found relatively quickly.Comment

Where is the source that says MT layed out everything we could do as a university?Or Kelly takes Combs to ND.

Might not be a bad move...As previously noted in this thread, I think keeping Coombs will be a big part in maintaining our edge. I don't think KC is going anywhere no matter what BK does. (which I still think BK is staying) KC is committed to this city and it would take a lot to get him out of here.Comment

No source. But his message quickly backed off vague strong commitment from sunday on.
I'm sure an 11th hour proposal could be made, but then you've made ND look bad. BK knows exactly what he's going to hear tomorrow. He may have not heard it in person yet, but he knows.Comment

The latest from our on again, off again sources over at "the scoop":
Sources tell us that UConn Head Football coach Randy Edsall has met with Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick and it has become very clear he is a candidate
for the vacant head coaching position at Notre Dame, according to our source.@mrgalati / @RepOfCincinnatiComment
