I don't get thinking like this. BK never told anyone they had to build anything for him. He said we need these things if you want to have a BCS level program. Even if he goes, I think that is still what we want. Those changes will have to be made anyway. Mike Thomas understands it. What BK did was force the timetable on the improvements. Everything he has done for the program has been good. It will suck if he leaves, but that won't change the fact that he has taken the program to level none of us could have imagined before he was here. If he can't cash that in here, I guess he deserves to cash it in somewhere else.I have no problem with it if he wants to go to Notre Dame. It's a big time school with alot of great tradition and I understand that.
What I would have a problem with is if he leaves after all he has said and gotten the University to commit to doing. That would be flat out selfish, and incredibly so, simply jerking around people making decisions worth millions of dollars in case he decides to change his mind and stay.
Having said that, maybe he doesn't plan to leave at all, and he's just trying to get a better contract. In that case, that's fine by me, he deserves to get paid alot more than he is getting paid now. So I can understand if he is trying to get UC to sweeten the deal a little bit more.
But if it turns out he still wants to go to Notre Dame after all he's said and gotten the University to commit to, then he is in fact a liar and a hypocrite. (Or maybe he wouldn't be a hypocrite if he was lying from the get-go.)
Maybe basketball attendance will pick up next year if he leaves.Comment

Beyond winning, is BK's style of football consistent with what they want at ND? It has been stated many times that they believe they need to be able to run the ball and play defense to win with their schedule. Don't Harbaugh and Edsall fit that mold more than BK? Does ND really want someone like BK (I know they should)?Comment

One thing about all this is for certain -- UC needs to know Brian Kelly's intentions immediately. They need to get a coaching staff in place that they can be certain will be around for the Sugar Bowl.
If Brian Kelly is leaving, he and any assistants planning to go with them need to clean out their offices and be out of Clifton immediately. No one should be on the sidelines for the bowl game unless they're planning on being here next year -- and that's especially so for Brian Kelly. Even if Notre Dame would let him stay to coach the bowl game, it would be foolhardy to allow him to be at the game for what would amount to a free 4 hour commercial for Notre Dame Football in prime time on FOX.
The longer this drags on, the more difficult it will be for UC to get the replacement hire they need (as guys in the lower levels interview for better jobs), the larger the impact will be on recruiting, and the less likely it will be that a new coach can be in place and prepared to make a good showing in the Sugar Bowl.
If I'm MT (and, really, I'm glad I'm not right now), I tell Kelly that I need an answer on his future, one way or another, within 48 hours. You can "listen" if you really want -- but UC needs to move on if it isn't going to happen here.#41
You can give it a patriotic name, but it still sucks.Comment

Couldn't agree more. If Kelly wants to USE the sugar bowl as a commercial for his new job, UC needs to step in and not allow it.
I applaud Kelly for the job he has done here. And yes, you can make the argument that we wouldn't be in the sugar bowl without him. However, if he's gone he's gone. Move on, and give the new coach the extra bowl practices to get to know the players...much like what we did with Kelly to begin with.Comment

Complete and utter bullocks. Coach Coombs has done nothing at the BCS college level to deserve the UC head coaching position (interim or otherwise). And if Coach Kelly does leave, it is quite possible that Coach Coombs will go with him.Keith Wedinger

Being a transplanted Cincinnatian living in the Chicago area the past 5 years, I am amazed at the number of Notre Dame fans here who only association with Notre Dame is being Catholic and growing up in Chicago area. What a fan base, but also comes with it a tremendous amount of pressure to win. I don't think this will happen, but for BK's sake, if he takes the job, he doesn't end up like the last Catholic Cincinnati coach to be the head coach of Notre Dame. That was a disaster. Hail Mary's don't win football games. Star players do.Comment
