Antitrust suit vs. the NCAA re: Compensation of athletes comes up on the US Supreme Court docket on 3/31. The AAC had a big part in this case making this far having filed a petition in the case in October.

This case is being argued in the US Supreme Court this morning. So far it is not going well for the NCAA.

Hearing is over. Things did not go well for the NCAA's side of the argument. I'll link articles when the journalists get them written up. SCOTUS will rule in a few months. We may have just seen the amatuerism argument destroyed by the Justices though.

Ruling is out and the NCAA lost. The Supreme Court ruled that NCAA’s denial of compensation is an antitrust violation. It was a unanimous (9-0) ruling.

I cannot imagine how this will impact college sports. They will basically be professional athletes now.

It’s not quite that bad. It only applies to educational compensation like laptops, paid internships etc.

looked to me like Kavanaugh gave the NCAA a roadmap to tie up the loose ends before the bottom falls out from lawsuits

College athletics about to turn into Major League Baseball.

Fans of any professional team suffers the same in free agency. I think the difference in college is most players will make only one move in their career and it will likely be a downward trend over time with the peak coming when it is fresh/new. As coaches learn how to recruit and better maintain relationships with existing players, some of the movement will be players who are recruited over. The big difference in college sports is that we (alums) aren't usually driven to love one team or another based on geography; our love for our alma mater will remain no matter what happens. This isn't true for professional sports where disgruntled fans tune out. Sadly, the diehard sports loving alumni base isn't enough to sustain the college athletic program and winning brings addition alum and geographical fans. I doubt it will be the wild free agency of MLB/NBA/NFL/NHL
