UC's track and field has come a long way. Once we were running on an asphalt track with potholes for outdoor and indoor, we know about those conditions. We even had the track locker room broken into and all of our sweaty gear stolen.
Ellie Leather, using a strong kick over the last lap, grabs third place in the 2022 NCAA Women's Mile in a time of 4:35. Congratulations.
This is the race (if the link works). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwtPoVC_twc
^Great highlights. Brings back a lot of memories. UC had a potential all-American, one of the smoothest runners I have ever seen. He got spiked in the calf at the Knoxville Relays in 1987 and never got back to his former talent. However, he still was good. He became a Cincinnati cop and was nicknamed feets while on the beat. He could run down the hoodlums in full cop gear. His name was Doug Wiesman. The only other really smooth runner that I saw was his teammate and did become an all American - Lewis Johnson. Both are mentioned in the link. It is a great write-up on one of the UC great track stars.
I'm late here but Ellie Leather will run at the NCAA championships at Eugene OR. She has has a top 3 three time in the 1500m and is a threat to win the whole thing. She's joined by Steven McElroy in the 400 and Leonie Troeger in javelin
Ellie Leather has made it through the semis, and will run in the 1500m final on Saturday. Kudos. Steven McElroy did not make it into the finals. Leonie Troeger also did not qualify for the finals. Kudos to those two as well. McElroy is a freshman, and Troeger is a sophomore, so they will have more chances in the years ahead.
UPDATE: The women's javelin did not have any rounds, so Leonie Troeger was in the finals.

Congratulations Ellie. This must be both happy and sad for her. There was a lot of expectations out there to be in the top 3. However, this is a really great achievement, and her year was a legendary one.
