Front Office Sports reported that, last Friday, after Nike announced a significant drop in forecasted earnings, the stock fell 20%. That cost investors $28B in one fell swoop. The company is facing pressure from competing, less expensive brands (New Balance, for instance) and are working on developing some less expensive footwear.

I'm not a finance expert, so I have no idea how this could affect Nike's investments in team support/apparel in the future.

One of the things working against Nike is they have essentially done away with their extra wide shoe line. As a runner with a 4E foot, most runners buy shoes a half size long and slightly wide to give a lot of room in the toebox. Alta and NewBalance are killing Nike in this area. Most people are brand loyal, i.e. they will buy matching brand apparell to go with the shoes, not the other way around.

The other thing hitting the shoe industry is Amazon. With Amazon keeping pricing lower, brick and mortar stores are keeping a lower inventory to keep overhead down. If Fleet Feet only does special orders, instead of carrying all sizes, brands, widths, some customers don' even get the first exposure to multiple brands.

Disclaimer: I'm a loyal New Balance customer simply because they have maintained wide and extra wide in all of their offerings. I'd pay a little more for higher quality items if it fit, but Nikes do not fit.
Red and Black are more of an Attitude than merely a color combination.

I haven't been able to wear Nike shoes in years for the same reason. Too narrow.

As far as the brand is concerned, I think the whole MLB uniforms fiasco where they farmed it to Fanatics really rubbed people the wrong way. Everyone who follows baseball noticed the issues. I think it really put a dent in NIke's quality rep.

I run but my feet pronate (turn inward). Brooks makes the best shoes that have an inside harder wedge to keep the foot from turning inward.

This might be much ado about nothing but the parent company that we’re currently contracted to supply our Nike gear has been sold. BSN Sports is under Varsity Brands which was just purchased by KKR
