The Bearcats and UC San Diego Tritons were scheduled for a 3:00 first pitch on Thursday. Continual rain pushed that back to 4:00, then eventually 7:00, when they finally got underway. Quinton Coats continues to hammer the ball. He pounded two HRs (solo & 3-run), with the Cats winning, 9-5. He now has 8 this season.
The Tritons cobbled together just 3 hits, 2 of which left the yard, leading to 3 runs. They managed 2 more runs without a hit, all with 2 outs. First, the UCSD hitter tapped the ball near the mound, with the pitcher nearly undressing Coats with a rocket throw that went into RF foul territory. The next 2 hitters walked, loading the bases. They were followed by back-to-back HBP, forcing in 2 runs.
Speaking of HBP, college pitchers (at least this early) are wild as the proverbial March Hare. Jackson Smith, UC's leadoff hitter, has been plunked 10 times already this season (in 14 games)! That would normally be highly unusual in isolation. However, he came into the game as #5 in that category nationally. One of the Tritons got drilled tonight, his 14th HBP of their short season.
The Cats are now 10-4, with 3 games remaining in the home series, 1 each of the next 3 days.

The latest RPI has UC at #5 nationally. The Bearcats have played 11 Q1 games (7-4), which is far beyond any other school's top-quality opponents. However, the next update will probably reduce that number, as UC San Diego have slipped out of the Top 25 (#32), which is required to be a Q1 home foe. Eventually, the SEC's depth will overpower the B12 in that area, once conference play starts.

The Bearcats built a 7-2 lead on UC San Diego in the series finale, then watched as the Tritons took an 8-7 lead in the 7th. UC tied it in the bottom half. The score remained 8-8 until the Cats walked it off in the 11th. I haven't seen the details, as the game recap isn't in gobearcats.com yet.
UC are now 13-4 after sweeping UCSD. Evansville will be here on Tuesday for a 3:00 first pitch. Following that, the Bearcats will travel to Provo to open B12 play versus BYU in a 3-game series. The Cougars (#152) are 6-8, with 6 Q3 and 2 Q4 losses.

I watched the game on ESPN+, Coats hit another dinger in the first inning, and the Cats had a 7-4 lead going into the 7th inning. UCSD had runners on 1st and 2nd base with 2 outs when the batter hit a routine ground ball up the middle that should have ended the inning. Instead, UC's 2nd baseman misplayed it to load the bases, and gave UCSD an opportunity to have their best hitter come up with the bases loaded. He promptly delivered by hitting a grand slam to take the lead. UC came right back in the bottom of the inning to tie it up and it stayed that way until Mitchell walked it off for UC.Originally posted by swilsonsp4 View PostThe Bearcats built a 7-2 lead on UC San Diego in the series finale, then watched as the Tritons took an 8-7 lead in the 7th. i think their defense has been a little lacking so far. they're in the lower half of the league in defense. but, they do have the offense to compensate somewhat. but, what's killed them, in recent years, has been slow starts. not this year. it could be a special season for them.Originally posted by ACAirborne View Post

I didn't see today's game, but the Bearcats escaped at home over Evansville. Trailing, 11-4, in the the 7th, the Cats cut 3 from the deficit, then blew past the Purple Aces with 6 in the 8th. Final: 13-11. UC are now 14-4; #5 in RPI.
Next up: 3 with BYU in Provo, starting Thursday afternoon.

Wow, did not expect that win. I was watching the game up until I had to leave, and Evansville was up 9-4 at the time. Our bullpen was pretty bad and our defense did not help them out. This is a tough, gritty team that can score and run. I agree with you DAH, I think this has signs of being a very special season for the program.

Ya that was a fairly disappointing loss. I believe BYU was under .500 going into that game and they shut UC down. The Cats couldn't get anything going off of BYU's starter. He had a nasty off-speed breaking ball that our hitters couldnt figure out. I was hoping to score more runs after we got into their bullpen, but that didn't happen. Hopefully the Cats show up Friday swinging the bats!Originally posted by swilsonsp4 View PostThe Bearcats fell to BYU this afternoon, 5-2. Game 2 on Friday.

Wild game in Provo this evening. Quinton Coats got the Bearcats on the board in the first with a 2-run bomb. UC later extended the lead to 5-0. However, that didn't last long. The Cougars jumped all over the Cats to take a 6-5 lead in the 7th. Back came UC, adding 4 in the 8th to go up, 9-6. BYU got one back in the bottom half. Then, Dominic Mauro mowed the Cougars down to end it.
The Bearcats are now 15-5. They'll play one more out there on Saturday.
