I believe that this is the first sweep in Big 12 play this season.

That is correct. At the other end, Okie State swept UC in Stillwater early in the B12 season, the only time the Bearcats have suffered that this year.

Final: UC 15, Oral Roberts 4. Not much to say about this one. The Cats rapped out 20 hits, with ORU managing only 5. The Golden Eagles are an above average team in RPI, but down in the 140's. The Bearcats just outclassed them.

Three games remain in the regular season, starting Thursday vs TTU @ home. The Cats are 15-12, in 7th place. The Red Raiders have struggled. The Horned Frogs are 16-11 & will finish up @ WV, who have a shot at the #1 seed.

The top 6 seeds gain a double-bye in the B12 tourney, this year at Surprise, AZ. That is the spring training home of 2 teams whose names escape me.

D1baseball.com just moved UC back into the Top 25 (#25). Three other B12 teams are ahead of the Bearcats (#9 WV, #14 KU, #21 OSU). In the RPI, the Cats are #21, with WV #18, KU #22, & OSU #27.

If the Bearcats take care of business this week, it's very likely that they'll receive a #2 seed in one of the 4-team regional pods. There's an outside chance at hosting a pod, but I wouldn't expect that. The committee would need to view UC as a Top 16 team.

The Bearcats roughed up the Red Raiders' Friday night starter, cracking 5 homers, 2 of them each by Quinton Coats and Jack Natili. Add in that Nate Taylor dominated the B12's second most prolific offense, and the Cats walked away with a 13-1 victory. The atmosphere became very chippy after back-to-back-to-back homers. The TTU coach visited the mound. The next pitch drilled Enzo Infelice in the hip. Infelice took exception, but calmer heads prevailed. The pitcher, then the coach, got the thumb.

Taylor broke the all-time UC season strikeout record of 109 by Bill Faul that had stood since 1961. Faul went on to pitch for three different MLB teams over 5 seasons in the 1960's.

The two teams ahead of UC in the B12 standings both lost. WV shutout TCU in Morgantown, 2-0, while AZ knocked off Okie State, 7-4, in Stillwater. All 3 teams are tied at 16-12 for 5th place, with the top 6 gaining double byes. All 3 teams are guaranteed at least one bye, so they won't play until Wednesday at the earliest.

Because of weather concerns on Saturday, UC and TTU will play a double header on Friday. The 6:00 game has been moved up to 2:00, with Saturday's game to follow, no sooner than 6:00. I received an e-mail stating that my tickets to Friday's game are good only for the 2:00 game, although it appears to be possible to contact the ticket office to swap them out.

WV rallied late, aided greatly by steady rain, to knock off TCU in Morgantown. UC received the #6 seed and a double bye. The Bearcats will play late Thursday night (10:00 EDT) against #3 AZ State.

In the game itself, the Mountaineers fell behind early, 3-0, to the Frogs, then tied it in the 5th inning. That didn't last, with a TCU homer in the 6th putting them back on top. The bottom of the 8th was a series of nightmares, with TCU's best reliever on in a steady, sometimes pouring rain. He couldn't find the strike zone, with several pitches way off. He walked the leadoff hitter, with the next Mountie lashing a comebacker that tipped off the pitcher's glove, eluding the second baseman. The third batter bunted the runners over. Shortly after that, the reliever launched one of the wildest pitches I've ever seen. That tied the score and advanced the trail runner, who then scored on a pitch that was even wilder than the other that went to the backstop, sailing well over the batter's head.

While this greatly aided the Bearcats' cause, the umps should've called for the teams to leave the field for a delay.

Last night, BYU pounded multiple homers and blew out TX Tech, 18-8 (7 innings), in the first round of the B12 tourney. K-State then followed that up with a 9-5 victory over the Utes.

BYU will face Baylor, with KSU following against TCU. Those winners and the remaining six schools will play Thursday (UC-ASU @ 10:00 PM EDT).

The cats fell to Arizona State last night. It may have been the 11:00 PM game or not but they just did not get the hits and they were error prone. They will learn about their NCAA seeding on Monday.
