It is a slow night. Obviously, the band is not nearly as important as a winning football team or hot cheerleaders and a hot dance squad. However, a good band is part of the pageantry of college football and therefore has some importance.

Because look at our band versus Florida. We were tiny. So tiny that the extra show HS bands were seated on our side. While I was fairly indifferent to the band at our own stadium (nothing to compare it to), I was shocked at how small it really was.

Football School, Basketball School, Band sucks. What a GREAT bunch of Bearcats we have here, geez.

Its all about pride and presentation. I see it argued in a ton of threads but seems a bunch of people dont make to many cross topic connections.

We could have the worst college band in the land and I could care less...maybe its just me.

The band is important - it's one of my favorite traditions in college football. But to debate all of this makes me think it is a slow night (well it's morning now).

The marching band is dependent on the football team. As the team grows and becomes more popular (and goes to more desirable destinations for bowl games), the band will grow. I know nothing about the inner workings of the band...don't know anything about recruiting etc - I will leave that discussion to those who know. I was in my high school band and went to tOSU my freshman year in college. When I went there, we were told about their reputation as a band. I played the saxophone so I couldn't join that band without learning another instrument. I played in the basketball band (and soon discovered the marching band was a bunch of d!cks...sorry off subject). Long story short - I transferred to UC and have always been very happy with my decision. tOSU/UF bands have tradition and MONEY. tOSU/UF football have tradition and MONEY. Both come with top notch football/athletic programs. I am sure those interested in being in the UC band has increased over the past couple of years (can anyone confirm this?). As football continues to build, band will too, and the band representation at games will improve.

This thread is an embarrassment to sports forums. why does this keep happening?

UC is a big time football program, it needs to have a big time band. I think Miami O has more band members than UC. I am a Bengals ticket holder, every year the UC band plays at halftime at one of the Bengals games. It is definitely a problem hearing them, the 65,000 at the Bengals game drown them out.

The marching band is an intregal part of the college football game experience. Big time football programs should have big time bands.

I agree. We complain that there isn't enough tradition at the football games and then talk about how unimportant the band is.

The band seemed bigger this year, but still not big enough. It should because now the band member can look forward to a potential nice bowl trip.

One baton girl needs a serious diet. The flaggers need diets also and a lot of practice.

The band has seen some improvement this year, mainly in the trumpet section. I still have some friends in the band that are in their last year and they say there are a lot of good freshmen in the trumpet section and that section has grown. The band would be better if it switched to an all brass band but that would also shrink the size of members.

Funny thing about the "big" twirler. Apparently she was told a year or two ago after the season she would be cut if she didn't lose a lot of weight which I was surprised to hear the director actually say something like that. And then I heard she had lost a lot of weight to stay on, but sure doesn't look it. I'm friends with the "attractive" twirler, her name is Kortney but she will only be around for one more year so hopefully they get some new freshmen in.

This thread has gotten quite a bit off topic from what I had intended on it being.

The band just seemed to overthink the sugar bowl. They needed to keep with standards people know and not play during gametime. I don't want to even begin to complain about their competence. I think they're pretty good actually, not as good as tOSU but their budget is stupid. But their 'play-calling' was pretty bad, and it was annoying as the game got out of hand that they kept playing inane things (and during the game...)

Note 1: Nobody has known the words to give a cheer for 70 years, stop it.

Note 2: The red and black is a great song, but nobody knows the words to it. Why play it over and over again and not play the fight song until the second quarter? (im going to post a new thread somewhere with the words...)

Note 3: We have a great alma mater, why don't we ever play it?

All of the superman crap is cool and neat, but really, thats a ton of work for the band kids just to annoy us fans. Keep it simple, let the band have a good time too.
