I wanted share the tweet from the Denver Broncos account of last night's pregame intro featuring Derek and his Brother-in-law, who carried out the US flag.

Derek sustained a neck injury two weeks ago and has not played since. He's having trouble with numbness and is seeing specialists. Hope it's not career ending.

Saw this from an 12/5 AP story, quoting the Denver Post - " The Denver Post reported that Wolfe's injury will not require surgery, and that he will need several months to recover. The Post also reported that Wolfe told 9News in Denver that Los Angeles-based spinal surgeon Dr. Robert Watkins informed him he had a type of spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)."

I'm not a doctor, don't play one on TV, nor did I stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night, so I won't opine on the seriousness of this.

I'll venture an educated guess on this. He's going to be asked to stop playing for his own safety by his doctors. Whether he chooses to do that will be up to him but this appears to be a degenerative condition. There are multiple instances out there of players at the pro and college level that have been forced to stop playing after this diagnosis. Not all of them but a lot of them.

I would expect the Broncos to cut him with a large injury settlement. Most recent expample of this scenario is Jarvis Jones, the LB out of Georgia who played for the Steelers for 4 years. Was the best guy in the 2013 draft, slipped to pick #17 because of the diagnosis during the NFL combine. Currently a free agent after receiving an injury settlement from the Cardinals during camp. No one will touch him at this point.

Have no idea what "type" of spinal stenosis he has but I was operated on over 15 years ago for spinal stenosis - they cleaned out the lower end of the spinal column so I could feel my legs. I was 40 years past my football playing days, but the surgeon never suggested that I couldn't go back to doing whatever I wanted, so I assume mine must have been different. Of course, he knew I wasn't playing in the NFL either.

Wolfe has been placed on Injured Reserve for the rest of the year. He’s in the last year of his contract so I would expect free agency here.

This is overdue but Wolfe has signed with Baltimore after Denver let him go into free agency. He visited the Bengals and they did not sign him <shrug emoji>

Derek Wolfe, after settling with Baltimore for an injury release, signed a one-day contract with Denver and retired. They (Denver) had him at their camp to speak to the players.

DW was done in by a hip injury and is facing a surgery on it. And he had his share of injuries while playing, all over his body. But he also expressed a desire to spend more time with his wife and three year old daughter.
