Gates had been playing in the Euroleague out of Poland for the last couple of seasons. He just signed with Abejas De Leon in the Mexican League.

He's played in Lithuania, several seasons in Israel, China, Germany, Poland and now Mexico over his careeer.

I don't want to put words in his mouth but if I made all my money overseas I wouldn't want the US taxing it either. That's pretty ridiculous. That said, I would never want to do the taxes of an athlete, domestic or foreign , because they get taxed in every jurisdiction they play in according to state and local laws. It's got to be a nightmare to figure out.

US citizens are taxed on their worldwide income, and Yancey and his agent or accountant should know that. Double taxation rarely occurs. If taxes are owed to a foreign country, they can usually be credited against any US taxes owed.

I was happy that Yancy chose to stay at home to play. However, in hindsight, I believe that it was a bad decision for him based on all the local people in his ears and head. Had he left town to play basketball, he may have been a much better player and had a better future. That said, he is and always will be a Bearcat. Just think how worse it is today with the NIL and free agency going on. I saw today that there is one college football QB getting paid more than 4 starting QBs in the NFL. This is no way to run an "amateur" sport. Wishing nothing but the best for Mr. Gates.

Intercollegiate sports was basically started way back when with students at several of the current Ivy League schools getting together to play certain team sports. No NIL payments, no under the table monies, etc. It was strictly amateur. They were students! I ask again - do any of the athletes in the the "money" sports even bother to go to class? Having put children through both undergraduate and graduate programs, and assisting said children in doing the same for their children, why isn't free tuition, free room, and free board, which at some schools could be a well over $50,000/year "payment" sufficient? I have followed UC athletics since the 1950's - I am losing interest rapidly at this stage and have decided to give up our seasonal football tickets. If I want to watch pro athletes play football, I can watch the Bengals.

UC's Athletics Department regularly posts each team's GPA. Unless they're lying (which I doubt), then the athletes are attending classes, either in classrooms or virtually.

It's probably a much better situation than it was when I attended from 1968-72. I used to spend my non-class time in the TUC game room. One basketball player got up to leave and said to a freshman, "C'mon, John, let's get to class." He received this response: "Why, I haven't been to one yet." That player quit UC before ever practicing and transferred to an SEC school.
