  • Heather Lyke

Pitt chancellor Joan Gabel announced her decision to fire Heather Lyke on Monday. Lyke had served as the Panthers' athletic director for eight years following five years at Eastern Michigan, 16 years at Ohio State (assistant AD) and three years at Cincinnati (assistant AD).

"Upon her arrival at Pitt in 2017, Heather guided our program through a unique period in college athletics and we thank her for her leadership during that time," chancellor Joan Gabel said in a statement. "However, as we enter a new era in college athletics, one that seems to change by the day, we need a new vision and a new leader of our athletics department."

Leo, I posted this in the Pitt football thread but didn't realize she was a former UC employee. I thought I recognized that name.

Are you suggesting she replace John Cunningham?

NO . I found it ironic that Pitt after beating the Cats , she was dismissed. Perhaps it was for the inability to thrive in the new climate or perhaps to the overall quality of their teams. Who knows? It happened at Pitt but could JC become the scape goat or is he well liked by the deep pockets (He didn't deny the Satt hiring)? The timing sure was strange. They didn't let her go to the end of the contract year. Perhaps Pat N is at the end of his time, and they want a new AD to make the new hire. She was hired during the time of diversity and now it is the time of finances and posturing for the major "TV" leagues.

There's got to be something else to this story that we're not getting. The timing was extremely weird for this. If Pitt screwed this up I won't be sad for them since they screwed over the Big East years ago.

My thoughts exactly. The upset win didn't stop them and I wonder if they were counting on a loss to a rival. Look at all the maneuverings in their conference. One has to think either personal misconduct or the need to get a business savvy AD to navigate this new climate of change. I doubt that if it was the later it would have been a brief/quick decision. Will Pat N. have a job. Was this an issue? Is the ACC about to go the way of the PAC12?

Narduzzi just signed an extension until 2030 coming off a terrible season. That might have done it.
