  • Rayvon Griffith 2023 OH SG 6'7 commit

Rayvon is a Top 50 recruit attending Taft HS in Cincinnati.

Today (Jan. 17), he went for 28 and 7 rebounds at the Flyin to the Hoop event up in Dayton https://twitter.com/FlyinToTheHoop/s...035650/photo/1 (box). I believe UC staff was on hand.

He recently (Jan. 1) announced a top 10 of Cincinnati, OSU, Kansas, UCLA, Alabama, Penn State, Louisville, Oklahoma State, Arizona State and South Carolina. https://www.on3.com/news/4-star-sg-r...op-10-schools/

Rayvon Griffith was born and raised in Cincinnati and it’s been home his entire life, so you might imagine the Bearcats have made him a priority recruit.

“It’s a great program,” Griffith said. “They’ve been riding me real hard, people in the city and stuff because I’m from Cincinnati. And you know, I’m like a top-level kid so they definitely want to do everything they can to try to keep me in the city.”

With that being said, does Griffith feel any pressure to stay home and attend Cincy? “I don’t think there is any pressure,” Griffith responded. “Whatever decision I end up making, I think my family, friends, and people in the city will respect my decision.”

Cincinnati’s coaching staff had a complete change once Wes Miller was hired as head coach in April of 2021. Obviously, the staff is new to Griffith as well. So, what’s their relationship like now that they’ve gotten to know each other over the last several months? “It’s great,” Griffith said. “They came in and told me I was the one. Ever since then, they’ve been recruiting me hard just trying to build a relationship.”

Unfortunately it does not always pan out. Look at Memphis who is loaded with top rated players as well as Kentucky, Duke, N Carolina, etc. It is a good starting point though. I think that UC needs one Kenyon Martin type player to be successful. We may get that in our next recruiting class, it does not have to be a big.

Unfortunately a player like Kenyon isa once in lifetime player, also his stats through his first 2 years were nothing to write home about. Get some long and athletic guys who have a bit of a nasty streak and teach them to be dogs on defensive end, and mix in some positional size shooter and some rebounders and keep the bearcat blue print of big strong defensive minded players alive. Cronin wad pretty successful with taking good efficient shots and defending like men. Rebounding like men. I want uc to get bigger faster twitch athletes that develop and mix in a few higher offensive skilled players in. Cincinnati has to keep the defensive mentality unless they turn into a 5 star nba factory type college, I know cronin didnt do well in the tournament. I think a lot was the pressure his team felt when things were not going uc way. Miller has to understand that with this team now, they need to turn things ugly, make it a rock fight, make teams have to defend u almost 20 to 25 seconds while passing and taking best shot possible. Teach them to box out, rdont be afraid to bench players even if only for 2 to 5 minutes. It's obvious there's things that if he could sure up we definitely could make a run in conference tournament. Rayvon has potential to be a really good player, but temper expectations even on some higher rated freshman because they are freshman. Griffith would be a nice get and wonderful player but he has things he also needs to fix, such as getting stronger, being more alpha consistently. Uc is definitely best place for him when it comes to those things.

Griffith scored 17 with 6 rebounds today, as Taft beat defending Ohio D3 champ Cleveland Heights Lutheran East, 56-43. The Senators led only 47-43 at the 5:15 mark, but shut the Falcons out the rest of the way.

Taft will play Sunday for the D3 championship at UD Arena.

Taft hung on to defeat Ottawa-Glandorf, 48-45, to capture the D3 title. Griffith scored 12 with 5 rebounds before fouling out. Taft was held scoreless over the last 2:09.

Griffith took a really hard fall yesterday. Got under cut somesomething serious although I don't think it was malicious. Stayed out one play after this which is amazing.

Chad Brendel -- Primary Cincinnati target @GriffithRayvon was outstanding this afternoon. Scored 22 points, hit three from deep, rebounded well and showed improved feel as a passer. Top 5 is dropping tomorrow. #Bearcats
