    2024 NCAA Transfer Portal Megathread

Your place for all things 2024 Transfer Portal, which is heating up today -- including actual news about UC targets/guys listing interest in or from the Bearcats, Big 12 transfers in and out, former recruits/familiar faces hitting the portal, notable big names entering, etc.

I am guessing that a large percentage of the players who hit the portal but didn't find a home aren't players that have proven themselves at the DI level.

It is paywalled, but apparently Ken Pom(eroy) posted something critical of this stat about all the players who hit the portal but haven't found a destination. One person he highlighted was Cade Arbogast, who spent the last three years at Arkansas (after time at juco level). He's a super senior with a 0.2 ppg, 0.2 rpg, 0.1 apg stat line at Arkansas as a walk-on (may have been on scholarship for a semester).

I have no idea if he is still playing, but take former Bearcat Rob Banks for example. In four seasons over five years (two at UC, two at Texas A&M Commerce) his numbers: 19 points, 18 fouls, 13 rebounds, 7 turnovers, 5 steals, 3 assists. Career averages of 0.7 ppg, 0.8 rpg, 0.2 apg. If he hit the portal again with one year left, why assume another D1 program would take him - what is he bringing to the table to improve XYZ program?

I have to wonder how many of these players were encouraged to transfer. My guess is there is a reason they are without a scholarship, and it isn't more slots for freshmen. When the FCS players jump up to FBS, they are taking spots of kids recruited to FBS schools out of high school.

Earlier today, I heard on Sirius/XM College Sports that 43% of MAC football players entered the portal after last season.

Part of the joy of watching collegiate sports was because the kids were learning the craft and playing in order to get better hoping to make it to the next level. But today selling ones services to the highest bidder diminishes the experience a bit. I'm a homer but I do still obtain some joy in our small market team upsetting the elites and blue bloods on occasion.

I still root for the uniform. It helps although I get frustrated with a few wearing the uniform.

Nonetheless, the [Big] 12 is going to be a monster.

Mississippi State transfer guard Shakeel Moore has committed to Kansas, he tells @On3sports. The 6-1 senior averaged 7.9 PPG this season.

NIL is taxable. It is divided into two categories - monetary and non-tax compensation.
The Tax Reality of NIL Income | TaxAct

Scholarships & grants are tax-free only if the student is a degree-seeking candidate, attends a qualified educational institution, and the funds are used for qualified education expenses. Beware of freebies given by others besides the school. I believe 12.500 is the limit before one is accountable.

This almost belongs in the legal thread. Scholarships are grants and not taxable? NIL is taxable ? Help?

Why do I have to pay tuition/room/board when (points to perceived lesser player) he doesn't?" Unless there was a really good relationship with the player and a great NIL offer explicitly saying he's getting value to pay for tuition/room/board, you will set up an ego battle that will be a nightmare for the team and coaches to manage.
