These guys seem to be quality additions but not the type to break the bank, and we were supposed to have a lot to spend this year. Still time, so I don’t know how concerned to be. We probably need at least 5 more bodies just to practice.

I have seen posts that list Elamin as a power forward. However, Utah State's roster from last season has Elamin listed as a wing. My question is, where does Elamin best fit in? He is not heavy enough to play PF in the BIG XII. Does he have the perimeter skills to effectively operate as a wing? So, where does he play?

I feel this way too, we've gotten the back-end of the lineup filled, but no clear stars. A bunch of guys who are going to be trying to make jumps in either level of play or minutes, hopefully most of them work out, but some of them won't and it's hard to predict who.

Tejada worries me, he's 6'9", but he is not a physical guy, he seems to play like a big guard. He was basically shut down by Sharp (6'3" guard) when they played at Houston and didn't seem to even make an effort to take advantage of his size on the interior. He could easily be a bust if he doesn't learn to play physically and develop an interior game.

Colvin is still the only guy who clearly projects as a starter. There are a number of other guys who could be starters, but there are no obvious stars, even compared to Wes's recent teams and remember, lack of star scorer was one of the big issues Wes had.

Carson isn't a guy I'd want as a starting PG, he basically played the 3 last year. He's more of an emergency PG.

We need a starting PG, a starting center (Allenspach isn't it) and probably a starting PF, all high level guys who are ready for the physicality of the big 12. I'm going to a little worried until those spots are filled.

Tejada is definitely a wing. I noted earlier that he has the size of a 4 but plays like a 3. Mahaffey is undersized but plays big like a 4. I think that dynamic will work. A bunch of interchangeable wings is fine as long as they can defend and rebound as a group.

I'm not as high on Colvin. He's a wing who can rebound and get to the rim. But he's not efficient (only 45% from two, 50% eFG), which isn't great for a guy who's not very high usage. Very inconsistent this season. EvanMiya and Torvik say he's not a great defender. I see him as more of a role player than a clear starter on a tournament team.

Carson played the 3 because he was joined by 6'0" and 6'2" backcourt players at NDSU. His statistical profile is an efficient combo guard. I think he'd be a very capable PG alongside wings who can penetrate and volume score. I worry more about him on the wing because of his size. But he's a versatile guy who can produce at the 1-3.

I think Allenspach can start alongside a strong post defender, which Tejada absolutely is not. In an ideal world Allenspach is coming of the bench, I agree. But good bigs are expensive. If we can't afford an upgrade, a rim protecting 4 would give us a good balanced interior. Either way, I see Allenspach as a 20 mpg guy, so we need another 5 whether he's starting or on the bench.

We're going to need a few more immediate impact players, particularly scorers, (in the mold of Colvin or Tejada) if we're going to take that jump from semi-competitive top 40-50 Big 12 team to NCAA tournament bound top 20-30 Big 12 team.

Torvik has our current roster at #37. It's already a bubble quality roster. If we add the guys who have visited (Riley, Hastings, Bonke), we move up to #28. That's 7-8 seed territory.

Fans are underwhelmed with Carson but seem to think Riley is a star. We'll see but the metrics say the opposite. EvanMiya says Carson is the best player we've brought in. He has the third highest BPM. He was easily the best player on a top 120 team and one of the best players in his conference. Riley was only the 5th best player on Tulsa. He can create and get to the line, but he's not efficient and not a good defender. He shot under 50% from two on high volume.

I would still take Riley so we have a true PG, but my main point is our stars are already here. I think we're all underestimating how good Tejada, Carson, and Mahaffey are. They aren't going to fill up a highlight reel with flashy iso ball, but they are all capable of star production. And we have positive impact role players all around. With an efficient offensive scheme this team should score. We're just missing some interior defense, which Hastings and Bonke solves if we can get them.

I think Calhoun is building a team that fill certain roles, has balance and will operate together as a team. We never had that under Miller. I like the guys he's assembled so far even though there is not a lot of WOW factor. I trust that he has a vision and is bringing in guys that buy in to that vision. However I am a little surprised that with both his and Corey Evans' interest and knowledge of the international game that we have not heard anything about any players being recruited from overseas.

The word on the street is that they are working on it.

That's a very good question. You are right in that the monster factory was more prevalent in the Huggins era and not so much with the Miller years. In my opinion that has much to do with the players today / players recruited. Back then, you had players working to get better / stronger in order to keep their scholly, now we pay players to come play. Plus Miller recruited players who mostly just shoots the ball who rarely liked going inside to scrum for rebounds. I can't think of one Miller player who when he missed a layup were willing and eager to battle two three times to put the ball back in ( perhaps Baba ). As opposed to E. Hicks, D. Fortson, etc who would have guys hanging on them and would still get the put back and the foul! The monster factory, to me is where you build rebounders and front court scorers and I would think that to be hard to do when you only have a player for one year. I'm hoping that the players CJC has brought in from USU are here because they want to be developed and the monster factory start producing Bearcats again. Thats what I'm seeing

I may be an outlier in the rankings game but, I with the right coach and the right players, you can have a well-coached team that understands the game and plays the game as a team. Every year, the tournament has upsets by mid-majors and the reason is because they play as a team and they make basketball plays. This may not be enough to get through the Big 12 gauntlet, but it may be enough to get to the tournament in the first year. We still need a player that can take the game over in crunch time - see Martin or Logan.
