Scott Springer's list of candidates

(Does not seem like a very serious list...)

I'd be on board with Calhoun. He did an amazing job turning Youngstown St into a 20 win team. The one consistent trait all of his teams have is they are good on the offensive glass. Although the one consistent weakness is they are always bad on the defensive glass. Shot selection was mixed at Youngstown St, but he has embraced modern basketball in his two year stint at Utah St, averaging 830 rim attempts and just 240 midrange shots. Compare that to our 570 rim attempts and 547 midrange shots this year. Utah St made 60% inside the arc this year, 11th best in the country. We made 50%, #247 nationally.

Groce from Akron is an interesting option. Not sure if coming from Akron to the BigXII is optimal, though it worked once before for UC.Originally posted by GoBearcats31 View PostScott Springer's list of candidates

As long as they don't do the same thing all over and get some cheapo coach from a Div II or NKU type of program...again. They need to pony-up the cash for a name that excites people and players.Originally posted by London 'Cat View Post

He did not fare particularly well at Illinois but he's spent 9 years at Akron since so obviously there is potential for growth (and it's a totally different era)Originally posted by London 'Cat View Post

He's been to 3 NCAAs in a league that traditionally is a one bid league. His performance at Illinois makes me question whether he is a good choice.Originally posted by GoBearcats31 View Post

And the university got one thing right.. they fired Wes before the weekend. You have to make a statement that this mediocre coaching will not be tolerated any longer!
Can't wait until April 1st and always take the cheap way out. The cheap way out has gotten us nowhere so far. We're right back to square one again, hopefully they'll get it right this time and hire a proven winner.

Evans needs to be the next in line as far as getting fired. What has he done so far? I haven't seen any Great accomplishments.

I don't see a proven winner leaving another Power 4 school to come to UC. It will have to be an up-and-comer.Originally posted by BearKatz View PostNow that Wes is gone, we do not need a coach that has to have ties at UC. What we need is a PROVEN WINNER!
Not another up and coming coach who might get the job done!

The downside of pursuing Jerrod Calhoun is that we're going to have trouble spelling his first name correctly. Wes Miller was so easy!

Where does the job stack up in the Big 12?
Cincinnati is squarely in the middle of the pack when it comes to the attractiveness of the job. The Bearcats were a regular in the NCAA tournament under Mick Cronin and Bob Huggins in recent decades, but haven't heard their name on Selection Sunday since Cronin left for UCLA in 2019. They have the resources to build a quality team, as the on-paper talent the past couple of years has been more than enough. The program also has a sound NIL structure, having hired general manager Corey Evans from the Oklahoma City Thunder last spring.
What names will be in the mix?
There are three sitting head coaches who stand out as potential options: Utah State's Jerrod Calhoun, Miami (Ohio)'s Travis Steele and Akron's John Groce.
Calhoun is considered the favorite and checks a lot of boxes. He's from Ohio, he was a student assistant under Bob Huggins at Cincinnati and an assistant under Huggins at West Virginia, and he has had varying levels of success at three different schools. He led Utah State to the NCAA tournament last season and won the Mountain West regular-season title this season. He was Kansas State's top target before the Wildcats were forced to move on, but Cincinnati is a more appealing job to Calhoun.
Steele is plenty familiar with the area. He spent 14 years at Xavier, first as an assistant coach then as a head coach, and has been at Miami (Ohio) since 2022. He led the RedHawks to a remarkable campaign, going 31-0 in the regular season before losing in the MAC tournament quarterfinal.
Groce is another name with success as a head coach and ties to the state. He was an assistant at Xavier and Ohio State, a head coach at Ohio -- and after five seasons at Illinois, he has been at Akron since 2017, leading the Zips to three NCAA tournaments in four years.
