provo: Cincinnati latest in run of first-time BYU opponents

espn: Tommy Tuberville: QB call will come right before BYU game

Coach Tommy Tuberville will let Kiel and redshirt freshman Hayden Moore compete in practice this week and won't announced his starter until shortly before the game. He said on Tuesday that he hadn't yet made a choice. "It's a good situation," Tuberville said on Tuesday. "You never really want a quarterback controversy, but this has kind of come out of the shadows and is not something we planned. I think we're in pretty good shape. We've got two guys we feel good about taking this team to the next level."

usa/ap: Cincinnati has open QB competition heading into BYU game

Kiel also was knocked out of a game against Miami (Ohio) on Sept. 19, suffering neck and head injuries after taking a late hit that was penalized. Moore came in and turned the ball over four times in the second half before leading the Bearcats to a 37-33 victory. Moore can run better but has much less game experience. Kiel has thrown five interceptions, with the turnovers figuring into the losses to Temple and Memphis.

byu sbnation: BYU Breakout Players: Safety Depth Must Step Up

While Cincinnati doesn't have a monster tight end, they do have some large wide receivers that are very effective down the seams, and BYU's safeties will need to step up. Junior Chris Badger and sophomore Matt Hadley both played safety for the Cougars when Nacua moved to cornerback. Badger picked up three assists, and Hadley notched seven total tackles. Both players will need to study the film and be ready to help Michael Wadsworth in deep and intermediate coverage in the middle of the field for BYU to get as many stops as they need for a win.

daily herald: Cougar running backs like Alge Brown profiting from position heritage

Coming off a performance where he gained 154 total yards and scored four touchdowns, BYU junior running back Algernon Brown gave credit to a slightly unexpected source after Saturday night's 45-38 victory over East Carolina.

"The biggest thing for me this week that helped me out a lot was was that Francis (Bernard) and I met up with Harvey Unga," Brown said. "He laid everything on us. He was like, 'when you see this, do this. Keep your shoulders square' and this and that. He came up to me after the game and said that on that last run, I did exactly what he would've done. It's cool to see how those things work out on the field."

bains: Welcome To The Era Of The H-Back, Bearcats Fans

As an H-back, it’s like having a running back and it’s not. It’s like having an offensive lineman and it’s not. It’s like having a wide receiver and it’s not. That unpredictability is felt on the other side of the ball, as defenses are left guessing about whether or not he’ll take the ball out of the backfield, stay in pass or run protection, or split outside for a pass. That’s what caught the Miami Hurricanes so off guard two Thursdays ago and led to the game sealing touchdown for the Bearcats.

Good article by Bains on Eddie Gran's use of tight ends to confuse the defense. I'm no expert on this stuff so its good to know that UC is using a creative approach towin games.

Okay. 2 days out and time to predict.

The Cats will have some issues to overcome. They're on the road, at altitude in a hostile environment. They must maintain focus.

Turnovers must be eliminated. The Cougars and their fans will feast on multiple mistakes.

I expect a shootout, but, unfortunately, BYU has too many advantages.
