Incredibly high expectations. They've run 6 of their last 7 coaches out of town on a rail including a coach who won a NT (Devine) and a coach who took them to back to back BCS bowls (Weis). I also think UC has an easier path to the national title, even with ND's reputation. Because they're not in a conference, they have way too many high profile Non Conference games per season. Michigan is not always going to be down. And what about Admissions Standards? That's always the knock on Notre Dame. Mardy Gilyard, for one, probably would not have been playing to secure a BCS spot as an Irishmen this winter.
ND has their own national TV deal, something no other school has. They have plenty other schools don't. But it's the classic grass is always greener job. They need someone with a big time ego who's willing to fly close enough to the sun that they melt their wings if you know what I mean.
This is showdown time for BK and UC. I do think he's the top candidate at ND. Anyone who has read Josh Katzowitz's excellent book "Bearcats Rising" knows how much the Lindner and Varsity Village projects put the athletic program into debt. There is only so much the school can do to pony up for BK. In the end, it probably won't be enough. I'm not adding flame bait here but I wonder how much revenue and $$$ UC lost by handling the basketball situation the way they did. This should be public info. Does anyone know?
Let's just hope Harbaugh knocks their f***ing socks off and gets the job. Hypocrisy will reign if ND is looking for a "defensive coach" and they take BK over Harbaugh, but they're already coveting their neighbor's coach, so I don't think they are hung up on taking the Catholic high road.
Unfortunately, I agree with #41's post above. I think it's more likely he doesn't get the job than he turns them down, and he must be feeling pretty good about it to handle it the way he has.
In the end if he does take it, I'll give him a hearty thank you for what he's done and I will root with every fiber of my being that he fail at ND.
The only thing I don't begrudge him is working his a$$ off to get the best deals for people like Quinn et al. Those guys aren't criminally underpaid like UC assistants used to be, but the step up in money and lifestyle for them will be significant if he takes them with him. Can't fault a guy for trying to take care of his people like that.
