Incredibly high expectations. They've run 6 of their last 7 coaches out of town on a rail including a coach who won a NT (Devine) and a coach who took them to back to back BCS bowls (Weis). I also think UC has an easier path to the national title, even with ND's reputation. Because they're not in a conference, they have way too many high profile Non Conference games per season. Michigan is not always going to be down. And what about Admissions Standards? That's always the knock on Notre Dame. Mardy Gilyard, for one, probably would not have been playing to secure a BCS spot as an Irishmen this winter.

ND has their own national TV deal, something no other school has. They have plenty other schools don't. But it's the classic grass is always greener job. They need someone with a big time ego who's willing to fly close enough to the sun that they melt their wings if you know what I mean.

This is showdown time for BK and UC. I do think he's the top candidate at ND. Anyone who has read Josh Katzowitz's excellent book "Bearcats Rising" knows how much the Lindner and Varsity Village projects put the athletic program into debt. There is only so much the school can do to pony up for BK. In the end, it probably won't be enough. I'm not adding flame bait here but I wonder how much revenue and $$$ UC lost by handling the basketball situation the way they did. This should be public info. Does anyone know?

Let's just hope Harbaugh knocks their f***ing socks off and gets the job. Hypocrisy will reign if ND is looking for a "defensive coach" and they take BK over Harbaugh, but they're already coveting their neighbor's coach, so I don't think they are hung up on taking the Catholic high road.

Unfortunately, I agree with #41's post above. I think it's more likely he doesn't get the job than he turns them down, and he must be feeling pretty good about it to handle it the way he has.

In the end if he does take it, I'll give him a hearty thank you for what he's done and I will root with every fiber of my being that he fail at ND.

The only thing I don't begrudge him is working his a$$ off to get the best deals for people like Quinn et al. Those guys aren't criminally underpaid like UC assistants used to be, but the step up in money and lifestyle for them will be significant if he takes them with him. Can't fault a guy for trying to take care of his people like that.

Oh. And I guarandamntee Mike Thomas has known this for weeks now, and if he hasn't been in touch with/interviewing the next UC coach, I'd be shocked. Could the reason why Hamlin didn't get the Louisville job be that he knew he'd get this one?

Look for a new coach to be named as soon as next week. In situations like this, thank god we've got a great (yep, I said it) AD.

I especially liked the part where he told the kids last week that he was going to stay and that he wasn't taking the job.

I also like the way he called out Mark Dantonio for being a liar, told the Cincinnati media "I am not Mark Dantonio," and now appears to be mere hours away from pulling a Mark Dantonio.

Respectful? Hardly. He's traveling down the same lying road every other coach has. I feel sorry for Mardy and the rest of the guys if they've been duped by another person who said that he'd be there for them.
While I won't be angry with BK if he leaves, I willl say I don't understand why everyone says he's doing this "respectfully".. I'd say it would have been better to not say anything and keep it in the locker room than make all the comments he's made.. Still, I am very happy with what BK has done here and will always appreciate what he's done... But as I've said before.. WE ARE STILL GONNA BE IN THE SUGAR BOWL AGAINST FLORIDA and We are STILL going to compete for a THIRD straight Big East title next year

Don't know if it was mentioned in here, but Jim Harbaugh has also interviewed.

I feel worst for the players and kids on that team that have been through this before and are looking at having to go through it again. I also feel horrible for all the kids on the team going through this for the first time. I fully expect that Mike Thomas does have a list of soon-to-be-candidates for the job, and luckily for the program it is not a place that I think many young and upcoming coaches would love a chance to coach at. We will have better facilities than when Brian Kelly was hired, a better national perception, and a completley loaded cupboard of players that can compete against anybody in the nation.
In loving memory, I will be a fan for both of us.

My gut tells me he is staying. He can do one thing at UC he can not do at ND, build a program on his terms. At any big football school the head coach is being looked at and pushed by a ton of others (factors and people). Right now he is King at UC why not stay there and build it the way you want too? He did say that UC has held to everything that they said they would.

              Why not stay?????

Just my gut feeling, hopefully my gut is not just craving a beer right now.

Does this mean they are willing to overlook? Or does this mean that they are thinking..hey we will be in New York, Brian Kelly will be in New York, lets at least talk to him and see what he has to say.

Amen. We're gonna get a smokin' coach, because this returning offense is a freakin' corvette.

Where would you rather coach next season? Louisville, or here? There you go.

Interviewing today and footballcoachscoop has REposted saying that they have moved on to Harbaugh and Kelly will not be the coach at ND. Who knows. It seems to definitely be down to those two with Edsall being the backup.

From the Enquirer. Maybe people shouldn't crucify him for how he has handled the situation with the players.

"Running back John Goebel told The Enquirer that Kelly told the players during a meeting that was called to discuss Sugar Bowl logistics.

Goebel said the players appreciated Kelly's honesty, and that they understand Notre Dame is a unique job."

footballcoachscoop is less reliable than if you heard the rumor at the other end of the telephone game. that's the one thing this whole situation has taught me.

that's almost 100% certain to be true.

But their recent post does make me feel better, even if it's a flat lie.

Is it bad for MT and UC to have a contingency plan, IF BK decides to leave for ND? If it comes down to that I am hoping MT can have a coach in place soon. I would hope that Jeff Quinn and/or KC coach UC in the Sugar bowl, maybe along side the next HC. Just some possible thoughts on contingency replacements.

(Mike London signed today with VA)

                                -Butch Jones
                                -Kevin Sumlin
                                -Chris Peterson
                                -Bobby Hauck
                                -Dan Mullen
                                -Jerry Moore
                                -Al Golden
                                -Jeff Quinn

                                Thoughts or ideas?

I hope UC, after all is said and done rewards MT with a huge contract extension and gives him a big bonus! I believe in MT and our Bearcats.

Go Cats...no matter what they are our Bearcats, BK or not!
