Forgot about that, a grad transfer with two years eligibility.

The last 18 months have seen their fair share of peaks and valleys for Tyler Betsey. He emerged onto the seen in a big way in the summer of 2022, first starring in the June scholastic events and then backing that up with a strong Peach Jam showing in the E16 division with his New York Rens squad. Last season, his first year at St. Thomas More, showed more signs of growth as he started to put the ball on the floor more frequently and diversifying his attack.

We bought into that growth and made him one of the biggest risers in last winter’s ranking update with his ascension ultimately going as high as 22nd overall in the country. When the EYBL returned though, his overall production didn’t quite live up to that level as he averaged 11.6 points on 39% shooting from the floor and 35% from three along with only 2.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists for the Rens. Context is relevant, of course, as he played on a team where he was utilized primarily as a floor-spacer with Dylan Harper being charged with the majority of the creation responsibilities, but still, there were concerns about how he impacted the game when the ball wasn’t in his hands and so his ranking dipped a bit to 40.

With the return of the prep school season, and a commitment to Cincinnati now locked in, Betsey is back in a situation where he is encouraged to be aggressive. He’s looking to make plays and simultaneously assert himself as a shooter and there have been more positive signs. He’s generally been livelier and more active, even without the ball, and continuing to stretch the boundaries of his offensive abilities.

They key for him moving forward is clear. He needs to keep developing the totality of his attack with the ball in his hands, but not let his offensive role or production dictate his motor or the other ways in which he impacts the game, on both ends of the floor.

To be clear, as this causes confusion every year, this does not mean he is a McD AA. But given his ranking, there is certainly a chance (though whoever picks the teams tend to favor UK, Duke, Kansas, UNC, etc.)

It does not appear that Betsey made the McDonald's AA game.

Rosters not supposed to drop until 4, but there was a leak and he was not on it (nor was McKinley).
