  • I think we all got too hyped up on the announcement of WM as our new coach especially with him being associated with Roy Williams, and after the debacle that existed with the regime before. Therefore the disillusionment the persisted after five years of generic and predictable has skewed a lot of bearcat fans. I for one just got to the point to where I didn't care to watch the 'cats anymore. So I'm not concerned about CJC fielding a team because as good as the b12 is I expect this years team to do as good or a little better than previous teams just by being more disciplined and able to adapt to game situations. With any success at all the players will begin to come here to play.

    • Last year’s team finished #30 in Torvik. I’ll gladly take that or better this coming season. The key will be winning tough close games, the kind we just couldn’t finish the last few years. We won’t have Jizzle to blame anymore.

That's a good start right there. His play at crunch time blamed him. Some of us saw it and just commented on what was on the court. JJ was never a victim.

No doubt JJ has talent, but he probably got more credit than he should have because of his father.

Are we talking about Hastings or someone else?

Agreed. He was a streaky player. Would have a few good games and follow up with a few bad games in a row. No real consistency throughout his career. I liked him as a player but definitely thought he was exposed this year. Too many bad plays/turnovers during crunch time. I wish him the best but easily replaceable.

I gave him a pass his frosh year. Speaking of pass during his second year I saw wretched passing especially at crunch time. I saw him dribble up the clock and the last second throw a pass that got his teammate off hs stride for a miss and a loss. Of course the shot lovers blamed the shooter and not the one who was supposed to be able to pass, but could not. Many just think shooting makes a gamer, but it is the complete game and JJ did not have a quality one.

                          • It's a mostly complete roster now. We still don't have a true 4, but that's not a big deal in the modern game. We can succeed with 3 wings if they hit the glass, which Mahaffey, Colvin, and Carson have proven they can do and Tejada/Elamin can be persuaded to.

Hastings is a top defensive big. 3.5 DBPM even beat Thiam's 3.4 by a hair. Evan Miya is a little higher on his offense giving him a positive OBPR. He was the only player on BC with a positive +/- for the season. He profiles as a pure 5, so we'll have to see if Calhoun wants to play two bigs together or rotate Hastings and Allenspach at the 5. Might depend on what Iweze can contribute.

                            My previous assessment:

Low usage on offense and a poor FT shooter (under 50% for his career) but an elite shot blocker (8% block rate, top 10 in the portal among players with 20+ mpg) and a good rebounder (11% OReb). Fouls almost 6 times per 40 minutes. Would be a nice complement to Allenspach when we need some rim protection.

I seriously hope he has someone helping him with his free throw shooting. That could be a problem late in close games.
