The Wes Miller Thread

At least UC/CincyReigns is giving increased NIL this season to make a final determination on Wes. If he can't make the Tourney with this roster or players stand around or loaf, Wes will be gone.
I hope UC wins big this year, not because I particularly like or believe in Wes, but because I want UC to win every game. Good luck Wes, you have a nice roster

I hope Wes succeeds this year also but I don't like his chances. In today's environment of transfer portal, NIL and roster turnovers it takes a special coach to be able to manage players egos, teach his systems, and produce a cohesive team chemistry year after year. And let's not forget having to keep players parents happy as well. I like Wes but I believe he is coaching in conditions throughout the nation that is severely flawed. And with that being said I think too that there are very few coaches out there can could excel consistently in today's college bball and so changing coaches is not a guaranteed upgrade. I'm afraid if things stay as they are that UC has found its place in the league and in the national rankings.

It is safe to say that Wes Miller's seat is getting pretty hot.
Here are a couple names to watch, should a move be made. I've seen these discussed elsewhere (including potentially on here), so not taking credit. But definitely warrant a look.
Jerrod Calhoun, Utah State (age 44)
- Cleveland native
- UC graduate (transferred in and was a student assistant under Huggins in 2003-04)
- 124-38 in five years at Fairmont State (DII), coached seven seasons at Youngstown State including a combined 46-20 record his last two years
- Hired by Utah State in 2024-25 and went 26-8, earning a 10 seed in the NCAA Tournament
- Utah State is currently 13-1, rated 26 in Ken Pom and 16 in the NET
Josh Schertz, Saint Louis (age 50)
- Went 337-69 (.830) in 13 seasons at DII Lincoln Memorial including three Final Four appearances (32-1 / #1 seed in canceled 2020 tournament)
- Spent three years at Indiana State going from 11-20 to 23-13 to 32-7 including an NIT second place finish including a win over UC
- Went 19-15 and made the NIT in his first season at SLU last year
- SLU is 14-1 this year, with its only loss coming on a buzzer beater versus now 13-3 Stanford -- Billikens are 32 in Ken Pom, 29 in NET

OF the two, I lean toward Jerrod because of his ties to Cincinnati and Huggs, but both have the same risk as hiring Wes 5 years ago. I'd prefer a high level proven winner. Shaka Smart is my dark horse candidate. HE is a proven winner and is making the same salary as Pitino ($3.1-3.4 million). Shaka has many ties to Ohio and the Mid-West. He was national coach of the year in 23 and is much younger than some of the "proven winner" names we'd heard like Pitino or Pearl, or Huggs.Originally posted by GoBearcats31 View PostIt is safe to say that Wes Miller's seat is getting pretty hot.

I think he's severely in denial. I don't mean to harsh on CWM because he is actually a nice person and has tried his best to ingratiate himself by embracing the bearcat legacy, but it is my opinion that it was very inopportune that the perfect storm of transfer portal, NIL, and our entering into the B12 thrust onto him all at the onset at his hiring is / was just too much for him to now correct. And what's worse if we don't connect with the right coach if WM don't turn it around, we could be for a long long ride remaining non relevant for quite some time.

I feel this is spot on. We cannot afford another failed hire. The program may not sustain it. The time is now to identify the next man in and it better be a good one.Originally posted by Rufus View PostI think he's severely in denial. The Enquirer this morning called for the firing of CWM. This is what I have seen many wanted in here that the media would speak. I hate to see folks publicly shamed, but he is a public figure and he said some off the wall stuff towards all. I hate to see one lose their job but a 5 million buyout will help ease the pain. Plus he can go work for his father if he can't get another coaching job. That is what Dave Shula did when he was fired by the Bengals. Many people don't get those type of opportunities.

Both of these guys have won at every level they've coached at. Usually when you see that, the pattern continues it. Cignetti and Fritz come to mind in the football world.Originally posted by GoBearcats31 View PostIt is safe to say that Wes Miller's seat is getting pretty hot.
