UC has been bombarding social media with stories from the 1980's. This was linked and I have always remembered this game because it was so late at night. UC knocks off #1 Duke. Watch the last couple of minutes and you will cringe at UC's inability to make a free throw but the winning basket will always be historical. 1998 Great Alaska Shootout Championship - Duke vs. Cincinnati (11/28/98) - YouTube

Somewhere I have a VHS tape of this. Someone on here years ago was nice enough to send me a DVD copy of the Opening game at the Shoe. I think that recording eventually made it to Youtube as well.Brent Wyrick

This story brought back to mind a story of mine concerning the Great Alaska Shootout tournament many years ago. One night around midnight I was using the radio, searching for a broadcast of the GAS tourney. The game being played was between a major school that I recognized and an apparent Alaskan regional team called Yukon. I thought this will be interesting to see how some regional Alaskan area school could holdup to the major school. I was shocked hearing the Yukon team playing nose to nose throughout the entire game. I, of coarse, found myself rooting for Yukon. I don't remember who won; but, it was exciting until they announced the Yukon team as the University of Connecticut. True story.

Oh man, that game was probably the single greatest sports memory of my life (maybe a tie with the reds sweeping the a's in 1990). I had come home that year to start med school at UC and was living at home, and my sister was still in high school. We came down late to watch that game live, and I still remember how annoyed I was at Dan Shulman for being in the bag for Duke, who I hate with the passion of a 1000 suns (again, a tie, this time with norwood U). Thanks for posting the link-I'd forgotten that Avery hit that shot after the buzzer to nearly negate one of the greatest plays I've ever watched in real time. I remember reading that the play never worked when they ran it in practice... As great a play as Pike to Binns was (I also got to watch that one with my sister actually, maybe we should get together to watch games more often), Fletcher to Martin to Levett is still the greatest passing play I have seen.
Was also fun to see a baby faced Mick on the sideline, and to get to relive Mel absolutely torching Trajan Langdon (who I particularly despised) on that last play. Ah, memories. Here's hoping for some more to come from the new version of our cats...

Matt Norlander (CBS) ranked UC 41 in his top 101 teams, much higher than I would imagine most everyone would have them
https://www.cbssports.com/college-ba...023-24-season/
They got a guy named Jizzle! Jizzle James is the son of former Indianapolis Colts running back Edgerrin James. Look for the freshman to work his way into the starting lineup in the back half of the season. Cincinnati is my pick for surprise team in the Big 12, even if they don't wind up getting two-time undergrad transfers Jamille Reynolds and Aziz Bandaogo cleared (coach Wes Miller thinks they will win on appeal). Losing four starters has many thinking the Bearcats will be lucky to make the NIT. But I'll say this club becomes the wild card of the Big 12 thanks to a huge season from 6-11 senior Viktor Lahkin. Cincinnati has a lot of older guys, which is critical, a key vet being JUCO transfer Day Day Thomas.
