I think we need to wait until the day the portal closes (May 1st). An announcement that they are returning is a great sign, but they could still change their mind if a big enough bag ($$$) is offered. That's what got MAW last year.

In the case of Reed and Sage, I expect they are waiting to see who we add and how that impacts their projected playing time next year.

    • After the May 1st portal closing, when is the next portal window ?

I think Ody would have been out there more if he had more offense in his arsenal. The defense and effort on the court was always there. Bearcat for sure.
No Labot. I was not referring to you. Sedz did a good analysis of examining the increase in Reed's minutes and tied it to the influence of a potential donor. In a second post, he went on to examine a number of different players and left out Oguama. I was asking about the possibility of Oguama's minutes being sacrificed because some donor wanted someone else to play. That post had nothing to do with any of your posts.

It looks like basketball only has one portal window every spring/late winter

          • Aziz is testing the NBA waters, and is committed to return to UC to work on the things identified in the process if he doesn't like his draft stock/potential.

Ody came to UC from Wake Forest in CWM's first year I believe. Ody always had the motor, tenacity, and attitude to be the lunch pail, punch the time clock, do anything the coaches asked of him type player. He had three years here and there was no one on the staff that would work with the kid. This young man is very intelligent and I think if we had some who knew how they wanted to play him to work with Ody he could have been a productive, approx. 9 pts, 6-7 rebs, and 3-5 assists per game. This staff desperately needs a "center tudor". Just because a guy is 7 foot and can block a few shots don't mean he can play ball. Someone on WF's staff saw something in Ody to offer him originally and he got quite a bit of playing time his freshman year. Then the portal came into being.

I think Ody got caught up in that his height was more forward than center, and our younger forwards (namely Skillings) took his playing time. You are correct, we do need a better coach to work specifically with the centers and power forwards because we should've got a ton more production from the 4/5 than we've seen.

                • I like Ody, especially as a versatile defender. But he never had a positive box plus minus prior to this season. It doesn't take a conspiracy to see why his minutes were reduced and he was basically recruited over. He's had a negative offensive contribution in all five seasons, and while his defense was positive, it wasn't elite to the point where we could ignore the offense. I think he had a positive impact on the team though even on the bench, always bringing the energy.

I would be curious to know what Ody's BPM was in is year at WF. Either CWM overestimated his value or just need bodies ( which we know is certainly true ) but still, that kind of energy and willingness to please yet not teaching all you can is a shame.

I look at Reed in the same light. This staff recruited him and has now deemed him a defensive specialist. I think he was the higher priority between he and DS and as it is no one is working with the kid to develope his shot, some ball handling skills / how to set or work off screens/ boxing out or rebounding. When he gets the ball he's either passing it right back to who ever passed to him or he takes that high arcing shot, I don't ever remember him dribbling the ball or handling it very much.

To be fair, I don’t think he played enough consistent minutes for any offensive analysis to be meaningful.

                              Ody's BPM each season: https://barttorvik.com/playerstat.ph...a&t=Cincinnati

                              2020: -0.3 (-1.9 offense, 1.6 defense)
                              2021: -1.6 (-0.8 offense, -0.8 defense)
                              2022: 0.0 (-0.8 offense, 0.8 defense)
                              2023: -0.3 (-1.2 offense, 0.9 defense)
                              2024: 2.0 (-1.3 offense, 3.2 defense)

He played significant minutes until this year. He became a good defender in his final season, posting career bests in block rate, steal rate, and foul rate. There were several games in conference I wanted Ody to play instead of Reynolds due to defensive matchups, most notably against OK St when they ran 5 out offense. Jamille had a lower BPM than Ody did this season, partly because he isn't quick enough to defend the perimeter (also because he had the highest turnover rate on the team).

Yeah, especially in conference play. When he did play, Oguama was good at staying close to his man. He made it difficult for his man to get a shot off. Evey game that Oguama has started this year, UC won. Also, when Oguama started, UC gave up less points. The coaching staff did not truly understand Oguama's importance to the team's success. I bet you all the Jack Daniels in Tennessee that if Oguama played significant minutes in the conference games, UC would have pulled out another win or two. Aziz cannot defend like Oguama can on the perimeter. With Oguama in some of those conference games, who knows what could have happened.

There are things that a player does that do NOT show up on the fancy stat sheets: how many points are scored against a player. To make it plain, Oguama did not give up a lot of baskets. Let's be honest here, Aziz gave up a lot of baskets this past season. I do not mean that to be disrespectful to Aziz. Aziz truly helped this team. There is no doubt about that. However, Oguama was the better positional defender. With Oguama in the game, perhaps UC do not give up as many points and get another win or two.
