ND is still tackling the backlash from honoring Obama with an honorary degree right after he reversed several pro-life regulations. I didn't follow it, but I think it was a slap in the face of the Catholics. I know people who aren't giving to them anymore because of it. I don't think they can be insensitive to it - probably would be better to hire a non-Catholic, pro-life or not, than a pro-choice Catholic. Because of the backlash from the Obama thing, I'm not sure they would welcome another onslaught of media coverage on the same issue.

Most Catholics in the US are pro-life. And while someone here complained about them being "intolerant" of pro-choice views, you have to remember to them it's murder, plain and simple. And it makes sense to be intolerant of murder, generally

In my experience with this board we are not normall permitted to discuss religious/political views, etc. But they seem to be very relevant to the head football coach of UC, and I think that is why they are being discussed. I guess really ND is the one school were they still matter. Or do they? That is what is being discussed. Does ND just want somebody who is a very good football coach like BK or does the person's background/character/political/religious/academic history matter too?

Too late. Bearcat Chris posted a link to this 26 seconds after it was posted on the Enquirer this morning.

              From FCS:

              Notre Dame:
Sources tell us that Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick has turned his focus towards Stanford Head Football Coach Jim Harbaugh. According to our sources close to the program, Swarbrick had put feelers out to Patterson, Stoops, Muschamp, and Kelly.
Wording is interesting -- "had put feelers out" implies that none of those feelers were fruitful and that this is Plan E. Could also mean Kelly said "talk to me after bowl season" and they don't want to wait. Who knows. The wheels keep turning.

You can give it a patriotic name, but it still sucks.

I thought the same thing. Could be reading too much into it, but the "had" past tense seems to indicate that the feelers did not turn out well for ND.

It's worth noting that the current rumors indicate that ND was turned down by Stoops, Gruden, Dungy, and Patterson. Nothing about Muschamp -- but he's got a pretty sweet gig lined up for him in Texas when Mack Brown hangs it up, so I wouldn't be shocked if he turned down the Irish as well.

So...who knows. I really hope somebody talks eventually, because there's a ton of behind the scenes machinations going on right now that I'd love to get the dirt on.

Guys, it was 21 seconds... hehehe.... but it just goes to show you that some serious pundits agree with me. Players would run thru H**l in gasoline trenched suits if KC asked them to. I was President of the Northwest School Board when Kerry coached there (Colerain H.S.). He is a natural born leader, and part of our current success is thanks to him and his enthusiasm.

I still predict if/when BK leaves, BT will have the courage to put KC in there. Mark my words. In fact gents, if BK does leave, and KC is not picked, I hereby pledge to not mention KC or Colerain until Jan.1, 2011!!!

I trust MT on coaching hires. When Dantonio left, we had BK in 2 weeks. I wish he would just come out and say he's staying, but we just don't pay him well enough for him to. And yeah, guess what, no matter what he says, the flutter will go on. This board has ripped apart coaches when they sign extensions, and the media doesn't seem to convinced about stoops outright slapdown of ND.

The only reason politics have been brought up on this board is because, as it turns out, ND is a private institution, and the leading catholic university in the united states. Swabrick notes that the decision is his and the reverand's. They have certain political choices, the catholic establishment that is, that they would like to maintain. Just like good old Bob Jones University in SC. Kelly's previous association, even if he hasn't been involved with democrats since the 1980s, could be seen as something that detracts from his attractiveness to the University.

It may not offend the wide swath of university participants, but the hooplah over the President's appearance in the summer probably has at least brought some of this into greater scrutiny. Given there are multiple candidates who have great qualifications, these sorts of marginal things may disqualify him. Offending even a small group of donors starts to get important when you pay 18m to get rid of a coach.

I think just by the fact that Kelly doesn't come out and end the suspense by saying he has no interest in ND is a good indication that he's gone if they offer it to him. I mean if he plans on staying why not prevent any distraction going into the biggest game of your UC career by doing as Stoops and Meyer both did? To me that's a huge indicator that he's very much interested.

Whats the deal with Houstons coach? Like I said if Kelly is gone UC needs to know because I am willing to bet we will be in competition with Louisville.

I would say this is probally dead on.

Chick Ludwig is far from a "serious pundit." Just saying.

Or, he coaches at a school where the facilities are in the bottom third of the conference, he isn't paid the most despite winning coach of the year honors both of his two years in the conference, at a school with the smallest athletic budget in the conference, and whose donor base is not only relatively small, but mostly green. Nothing we have currently makes it imperative that he commits strongly, because in that uncertainty lies $$.

Most of the 'rumors' have eliminated him, while the pundits (including lance mc) point out how ideal a fit he is for ND. I agree with this. If he went to ND, he'd be very successful. It's not clear at all that ND understands or appreciates this, and for that we should be happy.
