  • Wes Miller speaks on promising 2024-25 Cincinnati Bearcats basketball roster

    https://www.cincinnati.com/story/spo...d/73884670007/

"There's a ton of length and athleticism," Miller said. "There's a lot of versatility. I think we can play faster. I think we can get way more aggressive defensively. The different offensive options we're going to have is exciting. There's no reason to celebrate but to this point I'm proud of what's been created. Our returning players and our staff deserve the credit for that."

        Newbies:
        #8 Connor Hickman*
        #14 Tyler Betsey
        #20 JJ Rembert (walk-on)
        #22 Arrinten Page
        #23 Dillon Mitchell
        #24 Tyler McKinley

        * Previously numbers 6, 7, 8, 9 were not allowed; wondering if Hickman is the first #8 in program history (at least in modern times, yes)

Per @UCUniforms on Twitter/X, Hickman will be the first UC MBB player to wear a non-0-5 number since Connie Dierking in 1956-57 (#27, since retired as Jack Twyman's #).

The NCAA banned uniform #s with digits greater than 5 after the 1956-57 season. It was intended to make it easier for the officials to signal fouls to the official scorer. Apparently, a number of schools requested the change because they had retired a bunch of numbers and wanted more options.

            • We'll see if anything changes in the fall, but here is the roster with heights/weights:
              https://gobearcats.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster

              0 - Dan Skillings - 6'6 215 lbs. (junior)
              1 - Day Day Thomas - 6'0 185 lbs. (senior)
              2 - Jizzle James - 6'1 195 lbs. (sophomore)
              3 - Rayvon Griffith - 6'7 205 lbs. (redshirt freshman)
              5 - CJ Fredrick - 6'3 190 lbs. (graduate student)
              8 - Connor Hickman - 6'3 200 lbs. (senior)
              10 - Josh Reed - 6'7 220 lbs. (junior)
              11 - CJ Anthony - 6'0 190 lbs. (senior)
              14 - Tyler Betsey - 6'8 212 lbs. (freshman)
              20 - JJ Rembert - 5'11 N/A (freshman)
              22 - Arrinten Page - 6'11 245 lbs. (sophomore)
              23 - Dillon Mitchell - 6'8 205 lbs. (junior)
              24 - Tyler McKinley - 6'9 220 lbs. (freshman)
              41 - Simas Lukosius - 6'8 225 lbs. (senior)
              55 - Aziz Bandaogo - 7'0 235 lbs. (graduate student)

              - None of the returning players have changes, so just a carry over from last year it would seem
              - Betsey was listed at 185 lbs. when the signing was announced on November 8; would be great if he added 27 lbs. (though Mike Rehfeldt posted a video of TB this morning and he did not look--to me--super bulked up https://x.com/MRStrengthUC/status/1797615522307297592)

              • Supposedly UC is interested in potentially adding an international player to this year's roster, per other people who subscribe to the Trilly discord.

In order to add another player, someone would have to become a non-scholarship player, which isn't much of a thing these with NIL money. Ohio State recently added a transfer from like Kansas State and they are over the 13 limit but he was going to use NIL money to cover him (if I recall correctly).

Chad Brendel just mentioned that there's still a lot of work left to pull it off. He believes it won't happen. He hinted that it's a big from France. If it works out, he'd red-shirt this season.

Someone else mentioned that it's likely that CJ Fredrick would forego his scholarship to clear room. I'm sure his NIL could be increased accordingly.

We're still at 13 for anyone thinking otherwise. it's going to be the last year for it. Roster limits will increase to 15 starting next season.

                      • Did the NCAA ever clean up the rules for foreign players to get NIL? I didn't think they did.

                          • Halvine Dzellat will apparently wear #65 -- that's a new one

Halvine rhymes with Calvin / Dzellat pronounced Zell-uh

I am not sure how accurate this is, but also:
                            - They moved Jizzle James from 6'1 185 to 6'3 205 lbs. -- if he really grew two inches, look out
                            - CJ Frederick went from 190 to 185 lbs.
                            - Rayvon Griffith apparently shrank an inch in his RS year, now 6'6 but up 5 lbs ...
                            - Tyler McKinley listed at 240 lbs. (220 in signing announcement in November)
                            - Tyler Betsey listed at 225 lbs. (185 in signing announcement in November)
                            - Dillon Mitchell +5 lbs. from his Texas bio, up to 220
                            - Arrinten Page down 5 lbs. to 240

The intention coming in was for Dzellat to practice as a red-shirt, with NIL covering his academic expenses (plus some, I'm sure). However, with the rumored ACL injury to Tyler McKinley, Dzlellat may wind up playing some. CWM, in his interview with Jon Rothstein, said he likes to rotate 9-to-10 players through significant minutes of game action. He recognized that some coaches like to shorten their rotations to about 7 or so, but he wants to play fast and pressure the other team (which doesn't necessarily imply constant 94' pressing, just constant tight D).
