This is part of the last minute home and home contract we signed in an emergency to fill this years schedule out, so this game is in DC. As such, they have the rights to the broadcast but their conference doesn't have a TV contract so this will not be broadcast nationally to my knowledge.
The Bison are out of the MEAC and are 2-4 to start the year. They have losses to common opponents GT (by 3) and Bryant (by 6) . They play one more game coming into our contest on Saturday vs. Mount Saint Mary's. That game will be on ESPN+ at 4:00.
The guy to focus on defensively for Howard is guard Bryce Harris. He leads the team in ppg and rpg.
Closet Buckeye fans might recognize Seth Towns from their roster. Towns is a wild transfer story in that he played at Harvard for 2 years starting in 2016-2017 and sat out 2 entire seasons with injuries. He's missed portions or all of 4 the last 5 seasons with injuries and is now a grad transfer at Howard after spending last year with tOSU. This is only his 4th season actually playing because of all that and medical redshirts. I believe he's on year 6 in college now and he still might have a COVID year left.
The Bison roster tops out with Towns at 6'9. I would expect lots of action for Bandaogo in this one.
This got scheduled because logistics fell through for a better opponent. Personally I think this game will benefit us since we won't be walking in to Cintas later in the season without a road game under our belt for a change.

I took you up on your suggestion to search Dr. Earnest A. Just and lost an hour-plus in a rabbit hole of websites. What an amazing person, from childhood on. His story is a must-read; thank you for sharing.Originally posted by Corporateballa View PostHoward is an HBCU founded in 1867 just after the Civil War. Howard was the first University in Americas to give blacks the opportunity to become medical doctors. My great uncle Dr. Earnest A. Just (google him) is a Howard grad. My son who is a doctor chose Cincinnati medschool over Howard. In 1965 President LBJ delivered the commencement address at Howard’s graduation. Cudos to Coach Miller for taking the Bearcats to Howard!
His mom was pretty amazing, too, for her part in his development.

Clarksville is a big military town. That area is big into wine parties by the locals. That is not a big area for sports. Wilma Rudolph did come from there and there is a nice museum. Heck, when Born ready came to Jersey and played Seton Hall, the area was not full. He was a semi local too. The defense almost made me walk out. I spoke to Hep about it and George Jackson. They were embarrassed. The jets knocked the bengals out of the playoffs that night too. We did go to a nice restaurant after though.Originally posted by Geaux Juan View Post
From my very thick files of why I love UC so much - on New Year's Eve 1993, UC was scheduled to play at Austin Peay. I had some friends down there so I thought it would be nice to hook up with them and take them to the game. I called the UC ticket office and asked to buy tickets. I was told there were no tickets left, and figured big-time program in Clarksville, TN, yeah it's probably would be sold out.
So we stayed in Cincy and went to a NYE party. I asked if I could turn on the UC game and they said sure. One could have fired a cannon across the arena and not hit anybody.
My circumstances notwithstanding, sometimes our opinions are inflated by what we think the home team should thing about us.

...... I also was surprised at the poor attendance. I would have thought that a big name basketball program like UC playing at Howard would be a big draw. Was it promoted at Howard?

Good article from Scott Springer on Jizzle James, who made a big impact versus Howard https://www.cincinnati.com/story/spo...s/71768869007/

Exactly, the last 4 seasons we would have lost those games! Wes did a great job IMO of playing a few of these smaller schools this year that won their conferences and played in the Tourney as bearcatbret said!

I believe that we have played 4 or 5 teams this year that won their conferences last year. Yes, they are from small conferences but at least they are the better teams.

The Howard game was a very weird game. First of all, UC did not look like itself, especially early in the game. Secondly, you cannot call that game a shootout even though both teams scored in the eighties and shot over 45%. Thirdly, this game was hardly a defensive battle although both teams struggled to score and really had to fight to make tough shots. UC played just enough defense in the last minutes of regulation and overtime, and also hit just enough shots late in the game to win. That was a very weird game. I do not think that I have ever seen a game like that before. Howard is a pretty damn good little team. They are picked to win the MEAC for the second consecutive year. I tip my hat to them.Last edited by leeraymond; 12-01-2023, 01:58 PM.

This game coverage originally was going to be just a Howard audio stream. Per Chad Brendel, UC pushed hard for Howard to produce the video stream. ESPN was not involved aside from use of their platform infrastructure.Originally posted by DesertFog View Post
I'm glad we got to see the game, but it's all kind of puzzling to me. Why did ESPN+ decide to pick up the game only a few days before it was played? Surely this is unusual. Do UC and Howard benefit financially? (I hope they do.) I also was surprised at the poor attendance. I would have thought that a big name basketball program like UC playing at Howard would be a big draw. Was it promoted at Howard?

OK, I 'll stick my neck out here because I just finished watching the archived game.
Observations:
Tough environment because it's a small building with an unusual court and it was our first road game. Glad we won but also glad we played this game. I think a lot of teams could benefit from playing a road game like this.
We were not ready on the road and they played their asses off. That would have been a loss in previous years. Social media is what it is but we were favored in this and I saw almost no one give credit to Howard University on this game. I hope they win the the MEAC. They played really well and I was very impressed with the effort.
The cameras:
They were automated motion sensor cams with probably very minor human interaction over than the cuts to the baseline cam and some zoom ins. I was shocked that the majority of our fanbase did not catch on to that last night during the game. The criticism was unwarranted in my opinion.
The announcers:
No, they weren't the best prepared announcers we've ever dealt with but they were entertaining and very into the game sometimes to the point of audio feedback issues. I thought it was kind of refreshing to be honest. Every announcer is not Jim Nantz calling golf. Embrace different styles. This was fun.

ESPN+ opted to carry the stream. This was not a TV production which is why there were no replays, camera issues, lack of prep work, etc. They aren't pros.
