I think this is the first thread I can remember where the politics actually matter.

Further irony is that "Conservative" Cincinnati would embrace a pro-choice, left-leaning Kelly even as Notre Dame would turn him away. There are more Catholics in Cincy than South Bend I'd wager....U.C. Law '09Comment

You might be right Lobot. Religion also seems to be a major part of this and I find it ironic that even an Irish Catholic may not fit the bill. LOL!
I hope this is the case. If it is I think ND will find it hard to return to dominance of past and Cincy's prospects are looking better everyday.Comment

Catholics who are pro-choice generally stay quiet about it for fear of being ostracized or not even being allowed to take communion (as has happened with many politicians). As a generally pro-life Catholic myself, it still appalls me how intolerant some people are of pro-choice Catholics as leaders, teachers, and politicians. For some reason, there are a lot of people who see abortion as a be-all, end-all issue that determines whether or not someone can call themselves Catholic.
As Rational Cat says, there are many pro-choice people at ND. There's also a lot of pro-life ND alums who would tolerate a pro-choice coach. But a significant portion of their alums and fan base are stridently pro-life.
Remember, this is the university where a huge hoopla was raised over the President of the United States speaking at commencement because of his pro-choice views. Although diehard ND fans consider the coach at ND as more important than the President (and worthy of more leeway), your average bandwagon ND fan is not going to grant that type of leeway. Do they really want to split their fanbase over something so critical to their identity?
If anybody can find where BK expressed any pro-choice viewpoints, please post them because I'd love to show them to a bunch of my friends who are ND alums. Maybe I can convince them to write a letter to Fr. Jenkins and say they don't want Kelly

My 2 cents on the subject.
.01) My opinion is that Kelly stays. I think he is finally at the point now where he would be a Big East favorite year in and year out to win the BE Title. Sure it's ND but they don't have much going for them for next year except unproven talent. Claussen and Tate will both be gone.
.02) Kelly is using the media as a ploy to get more funds to the University. I believe him when he states he is happy here and that as long as the University is committed to him, he is committed to the University. I think Kelly will have a contract extension signed by the Pitt game and we won't here about it until a few weeks after because the University will be getting donors stepping up to keep Kelly. I also see this as a time when we find out that a sponsor has been found for naming right to the Jefferson Complex along with a hefty donation.
Like I said it's just my .02 but I feel that Kelly being a political guy, is using all of this for his and the University's benefit. And looking at it that way, one can see why BK was once involved in politics. BK for Life!Comment

I totally agree with this. ESPN has been driving the Kelly to ND story since the UCONN game. They want to see him go there, they want viewers. How many times has ESPN been right about their first pics....let's see Urban didn't take it back in 2005, and no one thought Willingham would have gotten the job.
I think Harbaugh makes too much sense - hard knocks guy, loves physical football, has a running game, and a knack for getting more with less talent. The most important thing - he's beaten USC twice! Stanford doesn't have the money to keep Harbaugh around ---- and the only way i see him staying is to see if RichRod goes next year, because he is Michigan guy. No one wants to talk about it, but I think that makes too much sense for me as UC and Irish fan.Comment

Id agree with that...And as for Kelly coaching in Cincy despite being liberal, coaching abilities and political beliefs are completely unrelated in my opinion and Im glad UC fans as a whole see it that way as well. What I really wanna say I cant defineComment

I wonder if this whole thing will boil down to Kelly seeing a strong plan that is in the works for a renovation of the stadium. So far we have given him just about everything he asked for. If we just pay him lip service on the stadium (feasibility studies) it will be grounds for Kelly to say they weren't really serious about making this program nationally relevant in terms of other major BCS programs. My 2 cents on the subject.

If Kelly is leaving I hope MT knows. It doesnt really matter what we know but atleast he could get started on looking for a new coach if he had to. Untill the Notre Dame job is filled I dont feel very good about the situation.Comment

Really disappointed to hear that Brian Kelly voted for Obama and thinks it's OK to, awh, well I mean is also pro-choice. But you sure don't hear much about college football coaches political or religious views. So what's up with all the UC players that write the Bible verses on their arms every week? I notice the black guys write them in white letters and the white guys write them in black letters. In other words, they want them to be seen. Does BK approve or just tolerate such a practice? My perspective is that of a TV watcher in Ft. Worth, TX 1,000 miles away. The only time I've seen UC on the field is at TCU's stadium here in Ft. Worth in 2003. I've never seen a UC game at Nippert, but I used to go to the annual Cincinnati East/West high school all star game there in the mid 70s. Also saw Youngstown Cardinal Mooney blow up Moeller there like 47-6 back in like 1973 or so--haha. Anybody remember the running back there--Ted Bell?
Well, it would be interesting to know if ND considers a coaches religious/political views when considering a coach for the postion. Certainly ND would consider their attitude about academics would they not? Was Jerry Faust a catholic? Was Willingham? Was Weiss? It would be interested to know how many of the previous coaches were catholic. Regardless, my esteem of BK has been somewhat diminished. But, I'd be a fool to try and argue the guy isn't a great football coach based on his past track record. I just hope it all works out in the best interest of UC and ND--whatever that is.
And I sure hope UC beats Pitt this weekend! I don't think Pitt is that tough of a team and UC should win!Comment

I didn't realize this was a forum for professing political views. Seems to me like more people voted for Obama than not. And yes....Jerry Faust is a devout Catholic, I do believe.Really disappointed to hear that Brian Kelly voted for Obama and thinks it's OK to, awh, well I mean is also pro-choice.
