Dushawn London of 247 Sports lists UC among those to have reached out to Arizona State big man Shawn Phillips. The Dayton native averaged 5.4 and 5.2 in 17.9 minutes per game this year as a junior. Phillips played a year at NC State and two at Arizona State.

I just looked up Phillips and found his bio to be more involved. While it's true that he spent two years at ASU, he originally signed with LSU for the 2022-23 season. 247sports.com says he's from Ypsilanti, MI, but had enrolled at a school in Glendale, AZ, to finish up HS. However, his LSU bio lists his hometown as Dayton. Finally, his ASU bio says Phillips started at Dayton Belmont, moved to Ypsilanti Prep, then to Dream City Christian.Comment

Per Sam Kayser of 24/7 High School Hoops, UC is among the many to contact Wichita State's Corey Washington. The 6'5 rising senior (who played his first two years at Saint Peter's) averaged 13.7 points and 7.5 rebounds for the Shockers this season. Had games of 18 and 10 versus Kansas State, 18 and 15 versus Memphis (overtime game), 21 and 11 versus Oklahoma State in the NIT.Comment

Phillips had a 0.2 BPM this year. He's a pretty good defender and rebounder (2.3 defensive BPM, 10% OReb), but a turnover machine (24% rate) who fouls a lot (6.6 per 40 minutes). Those weaknesses would be normal for a freshman, but you'd expect some improvement by a player's third season. His turnover rate has actually regressed each season though. If Page's turnovers were keeping him off the floor, I'm not sure Phillips would fare much better.

Washington had a 1.8 BPM this year, and 4.5 a year ago at St Peters. He's an excellent undersized rebounder (11% OReb) and a high usage guy who gets to the rim and foul line a lot, but he only makes 48% effective field goals and is not a good passer or defender. We need guys who can create their own offense inside, so Washington excites me more than some other bigs we've been linked to.

Tidbits from Chad's recent podcasts, he thinks Jizzle will be back (I'm not happy about that), expects Day Day to be back, doesn't think Mitchell or Skillings will be back, thinks odds Reed is gone are better than not. We all know that college sports have changed drastically over the past few years. However, the casual sports fan is unaware of the NIL and that players are being paid. Heck, many of my friends did not even know of the Crown Tournament. Things need to change because the current course will ultimately destroy the sports that we love. UC will hang on by a thread but will not be competitive with the high financed universities. The lower-level colleges may not even support sports when this is all said and done. I have never supported paying athletes and have had arguments with friends on this subject dating back to 1980 and I was one of those athletes who competed for the love of my sport. However, the worm is out of the can now and cannot be put back. The only thing that we can control is where it ends. If the SEC and B1G 10 is controlling most of this, the rest of the college universe must be able to get together and set the final rules. If the SEC and B1G 10 want to be pro sports with unrestricted free agency and no salary limits, then I recommend that college sports adapt a free agency policy that if a player is collecting a payment, then they cannot leave for at least 2 years. That there is a maximum payment to lower tier players. That there is a salary cap on each team. etc, etc, etc.Comment
