There's alway a set of top tier donors at various schools that have say and sway over a lot of things and are trusted to for input on decisions. I can think of several schools in Texas alone that have this situation. Tilman Fertitta at Houston is one who comes to mind immediately. Red McCombs at Texas was their guy until he passed last February. SMU has several of them that basically bought the school's way into the ACC.
