Isn't that essentially what recruiting and the transfer portal is doing? However, where I see this becoming a huge issue is a backup gets thrust into extended play due to injury to a starter, and he performs so well in 2-3 games that he further hurts the team by sitting out to keep his redhirt.

My two cents, basketball and football have it backwards. You should be able to maintain basketball redshirt if you play 4 games instead of lose it for one minute in one game. Conversely, 4 games is too many for football. I'd say if you appear in more than 4 or 10 minutes with limit of two games, i.e. 2 or 5 minutes per game, then maintain redshirt.

Matthew Sluka, the starting quarterback for undefeated UNLV, announced Tuesday night on social media he will not play in any more games this season.

Sluka said he will instead use his redshirt year.

"I committed to UNLV based on certain representations that were made to me, which were not upheld after I enrolled," Sluka posted on X. "Despite discussions, it became clear that these commitments would not be fulfilled in the future. I wish my teammates the best of luck this season and hope for the continued success of the program."
I did my part and the money wasn't delivered.

NIL isn't so much a fiasco as some players have to realize they don't have the marketing power as players with more experience, accomplishments, or in higher profile positions. A reserve offensive lineman making a six figure NIL is what is wrong with the process. It reeks of pay-4-play which isn't allowed nor should it be. Some players have more value or draw selling merchandise, signing sessions, or promoting a product. A ten percent increase in tickets with proceeds to go directly to players should be cause for an NCAA investigation. You don't raise money for NIL, they is either a market or there isn't.

Without completely going off here, I'll just say college sports is now a business in reality and businesses are going to pass expenses onto the consumer at every opportunity to maintain profit margin. (and solvency)

Adrian Wojnarowski retires from ESPN, joins St. Bonaventure
    https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/41313868/adrian-wojnarowski-retires-espn-joins-st-bonaventure

ESPN senior NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski has agreed to become the general manager of the men's basketball program at St. Bonaventure, he told ESPN.
    ...
The GM role has become more common in college basketball in recent years, as the transfer portal has made wholesale roster turnover an inherent part of the sport. The role includes Name Image and Likeness allocation, recruiting and supporting successful Bonnies coach Mark Schmidt.

Note that this is a pay site. I want to inform our viewing audience that if the publication, in this case, the NY Times, is located in a public library, you can read it on-line for free through your library. I learned that trick by reading the Business Carier through the Cincy-Hamilton County Library.

Very creative as the rich will be getting richer. They will sell 750 tickets for each practice totaling 150 k.

Ohio State announced Thursday that it will open its first four practices of preseason camp on Aug. 1, Aug. 2, Aug. 3 and Aug. 4 to fans, with tickets for each practice session costing $50....
They will also sell tickets to a luncheon with Ryan Day for 2,500 a ticket.
Proceeds from tickets to the practices and the kickoff luncheon – which are being sold by Ohio State Sports Properties, a locally based team from Learfield, rather than Ohio State's athletic department – will benefit Ohio State's name, image and likeness efforts in 2024 and beyond.

What do you imagine the turnout would be if the Cats did this?

There's much of this I just don't understand; but maybe someone here can explain one thing in particular to me.

The way I've always understood it, and perhaps I'm totally mistaken is that, despite the huge revenues we always see being reported, these schools and athletic departments don't actually make much from sports. And that's if they make anything at all. I seem to recall seeing a number of HUGE programs close to breaking even once it's all said and done. Some making a few million, some losing a few million, and many right in between at the break even point.

It was my understanding that this could be simply explained by the fact that the enormous amounts that the revenue sports were bringing in was then used to supplement all of the other athletic programs at the school. I mean, think of the cost it takes to run a single non revenue sport. Then start adding them all up, pretty much every program that's not football or basketball, and see how much of those "profits" were eaten up.

Am I wrong on this? Was I missing something when I looked at those athletic department financial reports in years past? (Ex: One year I believe Ohio State lost money on athletics)

The reason I bring this up is it seldom seems discussed when talking about how unfair and greedy the previous system was. It may not have been perfect or fair to players briging in the bulk of money but I don't think it was as cut and dry as saying these schools were getting rich off these kids either. I saw it more as a robbing Peter to pay Paul type of thing.

So I guess my question is, does any of this affect all of the teams at a particular school? If colleges were taking all of that money and using it to fund the entire athletic department what happens now?

PS Don't even get me started on how NIL is totally off the rails and has little to do with name, image and likeness. Or the complications Title IX creates because of equal scholarships and having to accomplish that with an 85 man football roster.

The school revenue sharing will be capped. That being so, the collectives will still provide the sums to hire the big names. With players getting money, I read that contracts will be issued. This will affect the transfer portal quite a bit as players will stay.. So, the schools with the biggest collectives, will still get their choice of players.I wonder if you will be able to fire the players not reaching their potential. I can imagine the need for more contract experts in the Athletic Departments as well as counselors.
