On a related note, Governor DeWine signed an executive order permitting colleges to directly pay student athletes. The order does forbid the universities from using state funds for NIL.

I wonder if this means Cincy Reigns gets dragged in house under the AD.

Not sure. I have not read the actual EO. But, based on my limited understanding of it, I believe Cincy Reigns will become a part of the University and/or its athletic department.

        • This is what's wrong with NIL:
Juan Soto has potential to earn $4 million, and Aaron Judge is estimated to have $6 million in endorsements.

Sorry, if that's the value of two superstars in MLB's biggest market, then no college player is worth the current NIL amounts, at least not true endorsement NIL. The system reeks of pay-4-play

I think you might be mistaking NIL for only endorsement money. That's part of it for sure but yes it's pay-4-play.

              • As someone stated earlier, there is a reason that SMU has taken a big leap this year.

Definitely. SMU is a poster child on how to be successful when you can buy players whether it be before or after NIL.

                  • tO$U announced a budget of $20.5M for NIL across all sports. Every student athlete will be on scholarships with some programs being eliminated to reduce the number of athletes to be paid. Likely more to follow from other programs.

                    • Not UC, but for those who missed it, #1 QB prospect Bryce Underwood, who was committed to LSU, flipped over the weekend to Michigan for a ridiculous sum of NIL cash reported to be in the low eight figure range. The NIL contract was entirely funded by Oracle's Larry Ellison. Ellison is worth 200B and is not a Michigan grad but his current wife is. This is more money per year for Underwood than the NFL rookie contract allows for.

This has the potential to cripple Olympic sports. Perhaps some lower-level D1 athletics departments who are strong (or looking to grow) in that area will deemphasize football in order to pump up their wrestling, swimming, lacrosse, etc. But where would that money come from, given that those sports generally operate in the red now?

I think potential is wrong. It WILL decimate Olympic sports and that sucks to be honest. I've read a huge amount of articles forecasting this. The one that stuck out was from Matt Brown at Extra Points . I'll have to go back and find the link.

                          • Probably need to start a new thread on this 'cease and desist' order against a middle school in TN regarding the use of the name 'bearcats.' This is absolutely PETTY on UC's part. The University risks alienating future hs players, parents and coaches as TN is fast becoming a recruiting hotbed due to population growth. There are other colleges and high schools already called Bearcats btw. Remember Danny McCoin came from that area.

UC should be FLATTERED that a middle school in TN wants to be called Bearcats. UC should send a pallet of swag/gear down there. Spread name recognition now and it might pay off later. Geez. This legal action is so beneath UC - PROMOTE the University down there, don't threaten a middle school for cryin' out loud - work with them.

This came up a while back on Twitter. It's not UC directly doing this. It's the College Licensing Company, which represents the University (and many other schools) for trademarks and copyrights. The name Bearcats is not in dispute here. Never was. Heck I can name 3 of them in a 30 minutes of me in Texas. There's even a high school team in Alabama (Cullman) that was named that because one of their admins was a UC grad way back when. No one's suing anyone over the name Bearcats.

The Kentucky Sports Radio account and Xavier fans are blasting this story everywhere on social media trying to make UC look bad. CLC is just doing it's job. This has happened MANY times in the past with high schools ,etc. The real issue here its the school is using the trademarked C-Paw logo without permission. CLC would likely not care at all had the school licensed it but they choose not to or were oblivious to the fact they needed to and went on social media with incorrect information, crying foul about the whole thing. UC is not at fault here.

                              • Ok, thanks for the clarification - can't UC intervene and grant a dispensation or something. I don't know what's it's like Ohio, but middle and high school athletics are strapped for cash - can't even find enough folks to officiate games. These are not 'for profit' entities so you would think CLC would back off if UC asked them to...this is just really bad PR.
