End of 5th: UC 5, Duke 2. Both of the Blue Devils' runs were solo homers, one in each of the first two innings. The Bearcats, by contrast, are playing their usual small ball. In the second, the first five batters reached: single to CF, bunt single, bunt single. RBI BB, E1 on bunt, SF 8, bunt single to reload.
Final: UC 8-3. The Cats tacked on three runs in the 8th, including a 2-run HR, then dodged two tight innings. In the bottom of the 8th, Duke put the first two on. A strikeout and 6-4-3 DP ended the threat. The ninth inning was similar: double, walk, 3-6 DP (Tommy O'Connor dropped the ball, stepped on the bag, and tossed out the trail runner at second.) Christian Mitchelle struck out the final hitter to seal it.
Great way to start the season. The rest of the series in Durham might be in jeopardy, as the forecast is dicey. The temperature at first pitch today was 41F.
After the second game of the series in Durham was rescheduled to 6:00 because of inclement weather, it took well over four hours to complete an 12-inning thriller, which was tied at five after nine. UC had the bases loaded in the tenth with two outs, but failed to score. Not much happened until, with one out in the bottom of the twelfth, a Duke hitter launched it out for their winner, 6-5. Kerrington Cross homered for the second straight game.
The two teams play again, weather permitting, this afternoon.at 2:00. The game will be streamed once again on ESPN+ for those who have access to ACC+.
Duke's pitchers have been wretched today through seven innings, with at least 9 BB & 3 HBP. The Cats, once on base, have abused the Blue Devils with multiple stolen bases and two successful squeezes. They stole eight bases between the 6th and 7th innings. It's 17-5 in the top of the 8th.
