Last year a player had just barely a 3 BPM. That player transferred to Houston, became one of their top scorers and boosted his BPM to almost 10 this year.

Last night he scored 22 points, including the game winner while leading his team to the Elite 8.

    Context matters.

Based on this thread, it seems you all would have passed on him because of his 3 BPM last year.

and quite a few of those came after offensive rebounds, where the defense wasn't set, and they got good looks - plus, alabama was just unconscious - like simas the first couple of games this year

not me - i believe in context, what my eyes tell me, more than i believe in the mumbo jumbo, new age stuff (****, i don't even have any crystals laying around) - you see a guy, see how he moves, etc and try to envision what he could do in different systems - that's coaching - the old line about bear bryant (for those of you who even know who he was): he can take his and beat yours. he can take yours, and beat his. some things never change, but they do get lost in the new age rage

Alabama only attempted 15 shots from 2 point range in that game, making 10. They had 51 attempts from 3, making 25. It's not like they won the game on offensive rebounds.

I'm not passing on anybody based on BPM. I'm using to BPM as a first filter to find a big man I'd be comfortable with in a starting role. (Uzan would have passed my filter with a 2+ BPM as an underclassman). I'd rather not bring in a question mark, but someone who has proven production to play alongside McKinley or any other young bigs we might have on next year's roster. You'll notice that I analyze every player we're connected with regardless of their BPM, and even said I'd be happy with Stillwell who only had a 0.6 BPM last year.

Nate Oats spells it out for anyone who wants to listen to his pressers, which are always enlightening. He said BYU goes under all ball screens to prevent penetration, and they were "going to rain them." It's a deliberate strategy to eliminate midrange and take only threes or layups.

By all means, please share what your eyes are telling you about the transfer portal. Sounds like you've watched how these guys move and can envision what they would do in different systems, even without crystals.

So far the only analysis I'm seeing outside of my mumbo jumbo is judging a player based on his weight. So I would welcome your insight.

I didn't mean to direct anything at you, rather to those who complain about what I bring to the table without providing anything themselves. You are adding to the discussion. And weight is a discussion worth having, I'm glad you looked that up. It's a stat like any other, and we should look at all available information and what it means.

To me, 275 lbs is hard to push around, but it's also hard to get moving. It's tough to defend screens or be first to the ball or contest shots unless they are right where you are standing. And Sommerville's numbers show that. The reason I like BPM is it shows what players produced. Are big guys able to use their weight to their advantage? Are smaller post players able to use their quickness and skill? Unless you want to watch a bunch of film on all these guys, advanced metrics are the best tool we have. But Sommerville is only a freshman and I'm absolutely not writing him off. If we want to be an NCAA tournament team, I think we need a proven producer, preferably an upperclassman, starting at the 5. I don't know if Sommerville can fill that role next year, but he could still be a rotation piece and develop into a future star.

Sounds like it's more than just a rumor now.

Did he have some connection to Drew Adams or was that another recruit?
