While the city of Houston has a population of 7:1 to that of Cincinnati, the Greater Houston area population is 7.5M, while Greater Cincinnati is 2.3M. So, roughly 3:1. That's still an advantage, but not quite as dramatic as considering only the corporate limits. The Cincinnati area is similar to several others cities, in that the population of the city is a "doughnut hole" to the surrounding communities, such as where I live out East of Batavia.

Also, while the college sports fans of this area are divided among multiple regional schools, the same can be said about Houston. If the Cougars were such a draw, they wouldn't play in a 7K-seat arena. There probably are lots of burnt orange, A&M & possibly LSU flags on display down there.

Lol. Yeah. I was a bengals fan in the 90's, too. I'm 54 now. Life is tough as it is. I know I'm in the minority but I have a low tolerance for being irritated by my favorite teams. Probably because I do take it too seriously when I am engaged. I love the Bearcats but it doesn't mean I have to watch poor football and basketball which is what we are getting. I can't think of an Athletic Director making bigger misses in hiring and still retaining his job but I'll admit, Wes looked like the guy on first glance and I hope somehow he figures it out.

My main point was all this Portal news isn't going to phase me. I want to get excited but can't because if ever the college basketball dream seemed hopeless, it's now with approved bribery going on. We went from kids getting suspended for a prospective coach buying them McDonalds, to whatever this is.

Thank you guys for not stomping on me for my opinion. I mean I'm still following you guys on here so all is not lost yet.

        • as far as i know, no 'cats have entered the portal? i find that a little amazing, as most of us thought that there'd be a serious exodus from clifton. i think tomorrow will be interesting, to see who shows up (physically) and who shows up (mentally).

Most of all the disappointment, I would imagine, would probably go away if UC could win. Talk about players all that you want, it is the coaching that makes the difference at the college level. If UC could get a coach in that knew how to win games, a lot of the attitudes would change. Still, there is one major problem. Coaching.

I agree. After 4 years with Miller I'm less interested in what particular players he assembles but more so has he and his program progressed in the areas of offensive and defensive strategy, development, discipline and in game adjustments.

Once again, not defending Miller. But Reed truly improved over the season. So, is it that Reed actually listened to coaching or improved by his own work? Like Kelvin Sampson said, the players who listen to their coaches are not knuckleheads.

                • So it looks like no players have entered the portal yet. Is it possible that some are waiting until after the Crown tournament as I believe there is some financial incentives for the players?

That is correct. There will be UC players in the portal. Unlike some schools, such as Utah and UCF, both in (or were in, in the case of the Utes) the CBC, UC's players all have withheld official entry into the portal. They don't really need to do that anyway yet, as their agents (or, in Jizzle's case, his parents) are working their networks. [This isn't to say that Jizzle is leaving. I have no idea. He just doesn't have an agent.]

                    • I, for one am disappointed that our players are not announcing for the portal. These talented but unmotivated dudes couldn't win last season and likely wont next . As that guy yelled to Tuberville,"Hey Tommy your'e stealing from this university."

I think it was more about opportunity with Reed vs improving so much. When you play, you gain confidence from the familiarity of being in the game and you get more and more comfortable allowing your actual game to come out vs thinking all the time while on the court and that mental anxiety limiting you from displaying your capabilities . That’s all that happened with Reed IMO.

Obioha is one of the top rebounders in the portal with a 15% OReb rate. He also converts 62% from the field, gets to the free throw line 4 times per game, and blocks 7% of twos when he's on the floor (top 20 in the portal). The bad news is he doesn't take care of the ball (20% TO rate), only makes 61% at the line, and fouls a lot (5 per 40 minutes). Add it all up and he had a 2.7 BPM this year as a junior.

He played well against Texas Tech in the first round, recording a 2.3 BPM on 7 points and 9 rebounds. Against Kansas back in November he had a negative 24 BPM, going scoreless from the field and 1 for 5 at the FT line with 3 fouls in 13 minutes.

He's not a complete player and would likely struggle in some matchups, but I wouldn't turn down that kind of rebounding ability.

                              • Not relevant to UC but worth mentioning re: Meechie Johnson.
                                - 2 years at Ohio State
                                - 2 years at South Carolina
                                - 1 year at Ohio State
                                - Just committed to South Carolina

Seems he had/has a bonus COVID year and then only played in 10 games this year and will have a possible medical redshirt. Seemed to step away for undisclosed reasons (mental health?) but almost makes you wonder about these kids taking leaves to preserve a year of eligibility and then get more NIL money.
