Baylor and TCU are smaller private institutions, affected by state funding and Texas good ole boy politics, but they are not state institutions like Texas, Houston and Texas Tech. Plus, Baylor and TCU are not always lock step with Texas on every issue the way TT is and I surmise Houston will likely be more aligned with TT and Texas. If an issue is bad for Texas (the state not the school) Baylor and TCU will likely vote with Texas, but if Texas (the school) is stubbornly taking a position on an issue for whatever reason, only TT is likely to side with them without question or fail. Baylor and TCU are definitely in the Texas voting bloc, but not 100% like TT. Essentially Texas will be able to effectively veto any issue on a whim by bullying TT and UH. I think Baylor and TCU are less intimidated.

Red and Black are more of an Attitude than merely a color combination.

    Intimidate! Dominate! Celebrate!

UC has the best chance to win the Big 12 in 2017 out of all candidates. It has been interesting to read local articles from existing Big 12 members. WVU does not want BYU or Houston because of the travel. ISU does not want Houston because of the travel. KSU likes Houston because of the travel. Etc.
The wv article is interesting but simple, if you only add Byu and Houston, things get even worse for us. I don't know why you would add only 2 teams anyway. To grab other p5 teams later is lost money in the now, while the back end is very iffy. Not to mention they are unlikely to get any really big/coveted schools.

          • The other schools in the hunt for B12 inclusion should send an article from "The East Carolinian" entitled, "East Carolina Athletics Doesn't Deserve A Seat At The Big 12's Table" to the B12 brass. (I can't add the link, for some reason.)

As they say, with friends like these, who needs enemies?

              • Yes. I really doubt that ECU is among the leaders, but they're certainly trying ... except this student journalist.

                  • Speaking of the enquirer, they have been all over this story. Just 13 more months to the start of the 2017 football season.

                        • I have a really bad feeling about our chances. I think they go with two and there is a very good chance we are left out. I would feel pretty good at 4 but they never wanted to add any of the teams currently being mentioned, other than BYU, so why would they want to add 3 more of them now?

I'm the opposite so let me be the yang to your ying. If they only add 2, I think it comes down to BYU and Houston battling for the second spot behind UC. UH is losing that battle to BYU in tons of ways. This is the part of my post where I veer from my norm and praise UTexas. Those people are very smart even if you don't participate in/like/etc... Good ole Boy politix. There's no way UTexas goes public in backing UH if they thought they had enough conference votes to add UH. They drew the line in the proverbial sand, and at least one school (ISU) responded publicly. The Big 12 will not expand by just two and give UTexas another Texas school. That means, in order for UTexas to get UH, they have to find and accept a worthy fourth team.

It's possible the Big 12 only takes two to not further piss off Fox and ESPN. I think doing so would mean an extension of the current Tier 1 rights deal until at least 2030 (when the LHN expires) and extending the GOR through 2030. This is a small likelihood but could open the door to adding Colorado, ASU, UA, and another school. In this unlikely scenario the Big 12 picks UC and BYU. Also, I think if they were only expanding by two, the announcement would've already been made, that's how confident I am the top two are locks.

Expanding by 4 is most likely scenario because BYU and UC have enough votes to be added and UTexas really wants UH and to keep their LHN without extending the GOR. OU is with them on not extending the GOR. Throw in the fact that the conference gets money, lot's of money for each team added and it's a no brainer. This eases the battle for UH even though they have less criteria than 2-4 other schools in consideration. It's anybody's guess who gets in between UH, Memphis, UConn, Boise, and UCF. There are a few others, but those are the top three.
                            • UH brings a sizable market, though most sets would already tune in to Big 12. They do have UTexas in their corner
                            • Memphis, good-great basketball, good market, and FedEx
                            • Great basketball and ESPN. This is a wild card. By getting UConn in, maybe more Big 12 games are watched in the NE and it leads to a better contract or more. Too much uncertainty.
                            • Boise brings excellent football and little else.
                            • UCF brings a ton of potential and market, plus it's in the Sunshine State
Red and Black are more of an Attitude than merely a color combination.

                            • I would not be surprised if they added UConn. Not that I think UConn would be the best selection for all criteria but UConn is most likely the next ACC addition and the Big 12 may take them just to squash the ACC.

                              • I do not think byu is near the slam dunk some folks think. Not the easiest group to accomodate. That said, two western teams would put wv in an even worse position. I'd be really shocked if they expanded and did not create the "north division". Given the tv economics involved, it makes no sense not to in almost all scenarios.
